Lately I have been making a point of logging out whenever my message count in “New Posts” goes over 100, since that’s how I have my “messages per page” set.
I have observed that the 100 posts per page point is happening several times a day, varying with day of week and time of day at least.
I had the notion to try to estimate the number of posts per minute the SDMB has averaged.
If there are older posts than …
…then these numbers will need adjusting to a smaller “posts per minute” but if that’s close to the first one when the post counts started, then we’ll be close.
The Julian Day for 3/10/99 is 2451248
Today’s Julian Day is 2456335
Their difference, or the number of days since the first post, is 5087.
That’s 122088 hours
And 7325280 minutes (which is as close as I tried to take it)
According to the Main Page the number of Total Posts (when I took note of it a little while ago) is 15,870,548.
That’s an average of 2.166654 post per minute over that period.
I bet it’s more these days.
Anybody have a method to see how we’re doing lately in this measure?
Now that there’s something recent to compare to, we can get a better fix on recent posts-per-minute.
That OP was posted Today 01:41 PM at which time there were approximately 15,870,548 Total Posts on the main page.
Here at almost exactly 8 hours (480 minutes) later, the count is near 15,872,291 or a difference of something like 1743 posts. Divided by 480 that makes 3.63125 posts per minute in the past 8 or so hours.
I’d say we have sped up somewhere along the way and not just today.
Does anybody have the data to identify the day, week or month when the posts per minute were at their highest?
I have been trying to locate a thread where I (assisted by others as I recall) listed the key moments when thread-count or post-count (and maybe even member-id) passed some milestone.
By way of those dates and assocated counts we could locate that “heaviest posting season.”
