FAKK 2: Heavy Metal - missing sky glitch, is there a fix?

On the last part of the fist stage (New Eden) and all of the jungle stage the skies are messed up. If anyone remembers what it looked like in the old Doom games when you used the cheat code to walk through walls and went into a part of the level that you weren’t intended to go to, that’s what the sky looks like. Generally it wouldn’t interfere with gameplay much as the actual level is rendered normally, only the skies are screwed up, but there are some creatures that attack from above and they are virtually impossible to see.

I used GLSetup to update my drivers (using a GeForce256) and that didn’t help. THere is a patch, but it seems to only address a ‘crash on save’ bug that doesn’t seem to effect me, and I don’t want to waste the time downloading the 7MB patch on a 56K modem if it isn’t going to help. Does anyone there know a way to fix this? The screenshots show some really beautiful skies on that level, I’d like to see them.

No clue. And not to hijack the thread, but how is that game? Is it worth shelling out another $40-$50?

Well, the game certainly has a lot of nice eye-candy, especially if you are running it on a good TNT2 or GeForce 3D card. One of the best looking games I have seen yet, actually. Gameplay is kinda like a sped up Tomb Raider with less jumping puzzles (though there are a few toughies, most have a trick to them that makes it a lot easier) and a lot more creatures to attack. You can get around in a lot of ways too, definitely more moves than the first couple of Tomb Raiders, not sure though about the 3rd and later since I never played them. Interesting though not entirely original mix of weapons, with quite a few hand-to-hand weapons like a chainsword, a giant axe, and a ridiculously long glowing magic sword (the thing is 10 feet long at least, you can’t even see the tip of the sword when you are holding it between swings with the normal camera perspective). There are combo moves you can do sometimes which depend on what combination of weapons you are holding, for instance when you are holding an uzi in one hand and a sword in the other, she does this kinda neat dancing/spinning/slashing attack that she punctuates with short bursts from the uzi - they look neat but I don’t use them much. It has it’s annoying moments, like when you are trying to navigate a somewhat complex area with some big drops and you are suddenly swarmed by Daikatana-esque small flying enemies.

I think it was worth the $44 I paid for it. I hear it’s pretty short and if you know what you are doing you can play through it in 6 hours, but I read you can play straight through the game only finding about half of the 20 weapons, and some of the more powerful ones can be found earlier in the game if you explore. It’s really not my style of game (I like RPGs, FPSs, and strategy games) but it’s enjoyable just to see new stuff - the first of the game was nothign too special visually at first, but when you get later into the game there are some VERY impressive sights and levels. If you liked Tomb Raider you would probably love this, and if you like (mostly) well designed and pretty action games, you’d like it too. If you don’t fit into one of those categories, I would try the demo first if $40-$60 is a significant amount of money for you.

Hm, interesting. I personally have a strong dislike for the TR series, but that’s mostly because the controls were clunky - I assume a computer game would be better in this arena. The eyecandy screenshots they had on the box for FAKK 2 looked cool, but the sales guy at EB (whose opinion I actually respect) said the game wasn’t all that great - considering I had a copy of Deus Ex in my hands, he may have been subconsciously comparing. Oh well, I’ll do what I always do - finish my current game of the month (Deus Ex, at the moment), and move on to the next. Warcraft III being a way’s away, it might be FAKK 2…
