Anyone with the DVD boxsets; does the commentary or any of the extras ever say why the show is always referencing them? Not even little references like on the Simpsons. The family is usually watching TV shows that were popular in the 70s. For example; Kojak(sp?), Brady Bunch, The Incredible Hulk. Stewie even mimicked the Operation Game commercial on his little recorder. Anything else?
Writer/Creator Seth McFarlane was born in '73. It’s probably just a nostalgia thing.
I personally don’t have much nostalgia for anything before I was 8yrs old, YMMV.
I do, so I guess MMVs.
Heh, I notice all of the 80s references. Peter is particularly obssesed with Who’s The Boss, Family Ties, and Facts of Life—the shows I watched when I was 8 years old.
Note that in the Indian Casino ep, Peter’s spirit guide is Fonzie.
Just remembered, the Family owned (owns?) a Pet Rock.
Then you probably had a TV with poor UHF reception. I am the same age as MacFarlane and I watched these shows over and over every afternoon after school in syndication.

Whereas the makers of the Simpsons are older and Homer’s spirit guide was Col. Klink. See how this makes sense?
Nope. Homers spirit guide was a coyote voiced by Johnny Cash.
adam yax: Homer’s guardian angel appears to him as Col. Klink.
And there’s a fine distinction between a guardian angel and a spirit guide, anyway.
