Here’s what I think. Stewie told Brian that he traveled forward in time to get the new Christmas toys. In the Christmas episode Stewie will meet up with himself, use the return pad to travel back and save Brian. Until then we have to deal with Paulie the Pooch.

Seriously, it’s been a little-known undocumented feature in vBulletin since version 2.0.
Next week is a repeat of the Mount Everest episode. However, I wouldn’t put it past Seth to have Brian appear in the opening credits in the next new episode (in two weeks), and then they stop the opening number and make some joke along the lines of, “Aren’t you dead?”
And a number of us - myself included - thought for sure that it would be Peter’s mother, since Phyllis Diller (who voiced her) died last year.
That seems to be the favored theory at the moment. Also, this limites Paulie to two episodes at most (12/8 and 12/15)
Also note that the people who obsess about such things have pointed out that there are episodes scheduled for later in the season with Brian’s name in the title, and I think the Comic-Con panel where the potential death was first announced also announced an episode featuring Brian that has not aired yet. (Some people noticed that Peter, Lois, Meg, Brian, and Stewie were mentioned in titles, but not Chris, and thought that maybe Chris would be the one killed because Seth Green was too busy with Dads.)

The show does so much science fiction stuff they can bring Brian back in an infinite amount of ways, so I see no point in trying to predict how.
However, I will predict that Vinnie’s fate will be in a Chinese-people-eat-dogs joke.

Without Brian’s death, I think the attention would have been focused on the entirely offensive opening sequence. I know Family Guy is in the business of being offensive, but that one was a bit over the line for me. I’m sure the writers knew the gnashing of the teeth would be over Brian and the rest of the episode is irrelevant!
Yeah, that opening sequence made me think: This is the kind of ethnic humor that went out of fashion decades ago. Is it okay now because we know better and can accept it as making fun of the ridiculous stereotypes rather than of the people themselves?
I think that is pretty much what Daniel Tosh is counting on.
I mean, was it a Blazing Saddles style racism, where the joke isn’t “look we called this guy ‘nigger’”, but rather, “look, we’re idiots because we’re racist.”?
