Ok…another SFP note to himself.
Anyone else suffering through this “win Rupert” thing? I cannot believe how poorly TinyCo plans these events out, not to mention how poorly they announce things. I suspect that this isn’t because they are incompetent boobs, but because they want to maximize their money generation. And it must be working, because I cannot explain why they continue to do things the way they do.
For instance, this “win Rupert” and Stweie tea party event ran from Saturday morning until Tuesday (today) night. The problems with the event:
- unless you are completely obsessed with TQFS, or have some way of knowing what is coming before it is announced (which I do not, and I am not obsessed with the game either… At least not to the level necessary), you missed the first day either partially or completely.
For example, I logged in when I got a chance sometime Saturday, around noon or so. I saw the announcement for the tea party, but i didn’t read it that closely (ok, that’s my fault, not TinyCo’s), and I clicked through those announcement screens to get to the collection of any prizes I am still chasing down for the collection of Falconer Peter, PB&J Brian, Carter, and Stewie. Once I click on all the characters and put them back on their quests to get another one of these stupid items to collect.
I come back to the game later that day, around 7 pm or so, and finally read the tea party screens. Ok, I find that i need to send 4 characters that are currently collecting crap for one of the four other items needed for the game mentioned above to try to get a toy for Stewie. After collecting 6 of the toy, you get to open a present. After 14, another toy and so forth…
So I put all 4 characters on the quest to get the toy, only to realize too late that I have no chance to get the 6 needed before time runs out to collect one present for Stewie. Saturday, one day of this “event” has been waisted."
2). The next days aren’t much better. Unless you wake up at 10 pm PDT, and start your 4 characters on their tasks, you will not have a chance to get 3 presents without spending clams. On Saturday, I was able to get “only” 16 clams, which permitted two presents to be opened. (No Rupert, but I’m ok with that). 16 toys required 4 cycles of the 4 characters to get their toys each and every time. And the toys have been falling for me at 100%, but that isn’t really the issue. In order to get the third and final prize, you need to gather 24 toys, which is impossible. That would require you to start each character 6 times in a 24 hour period, (which IS possible) and collect their toy prizes and set them on their way again within the 24 hour period (which is NOT possible.). You HAVE to spend clams to get that 3rd present, if you are so inclined.
I have quite a few friends now on my Facebook game account, and judging by other towns, and the comments people are making on the TQFS FB page, many people are spending real cash on this game. Which is, after all, the goal of TinyCo. Make money. I have no problem with this, but I don’t like how they have gone about getting people to open their wallets. Making folks come oh so close to completing a quest, or finishing an outfit, or whatever… And the only way to make all the hard work pay off is to spend money is NOT a good way to do it, in my opinion. However, I am looking at it from the players POV, and a Freemium POV at that.
Most of the players I am friends with don’t seem to mind spending cash, unless it gets up there for any single purchase. But it amazes me how many people think nothing of dropping $20 or $30 on something for their town.
So, I believe that TinyCo.'s model is ingenious and is working, or they wouldn’t keep using it. It is no fun for freemium players, but we aren’t their target audience, and they don’t care if we keep playing or quit.
I can’t say as I blame them.
I have the ability to collect 2 more presents before tonight’s deadline… 2 more chances for Rupert, or some other prize. I will report back at the end of this (to myself, if I am the only one using this thread!) to list all prizes received.
For the record, I still have not landed Carter, Stewie, PB&J Brian or Falconer Peter yet, either.
