Fantasy Football early general discussion

Woops, forgot to send you the info. Yeah, you’re good people.

Just signed back up for the keeper league and the big league.

I remember there being some noise about the schedule in the big league, and how there was some unevenness in the number of games people were playing in their own division. I know it’d be a huge undertaking - I wonder if there are any tools out there that could spit out a 20-team, 4-division balanced schedule that we could plug in (custom schedules are possible - but I just bet it’s time consuming). At the very least it’d be good to designate the non-bye week matchups as division games.

I’d be willing to co-commish for a bit to do the manual labor. Lord knows I have the time.

I’m still trying to figure out how I didn’t win with Peterson, Foster and Charles on my roster…

I haven’t created the keeper league for this season yet…

I love the new defensive scoring potential here. A stellar defense could always help you out but this should make the field a little deeper now. It should also help take away that negative points from defense factor. Although, it was pretty funny to see a close match get blown because someones defense could not stop their opponent from scoring.

I am good with any other scoring changes as well but not nearly as excited as I am about the defensive changes. The pick six penalty is also a good one.

I’ve started the league threads for the leagues I run. VarlosZ will probably start the dynasty thread when he’s done killing hookers.

All-pro
Auction
Big League

None of those are recruiting quite yet except the auction league has one slot open. The big league will very likely need people but I want to give everyone a chance to re-up from last year. If you’re interested in either one, talk to me.

If a spot in the All-pro league opens up I’d like in.

Could ya let me know or post something when your leagues are full? If there’s still time, I’ll start one, but I don’t want to leech players from your established leagues…

If you’re going to start a new league, do you have any interest in making it either a 2QB league or a league with an Offense Flex Player (which can be a QB). I’m very interested in playing in a good 2 QB league.

Appreciate the sentiment - I was planning on giving people about a month to sign up before I started giving their slots away, and I don’t know if you want to wait that long. It’s fine if you don’t. If you have something new and novel about your league (like what Dale was saying) we can probably overlap with no issue - people can even be in several of the leagues. What may become problematic is if you just copy one of the leagues with a tweak - like if you’re talking about your original plan to run a different big league with a serpentine draft. If that’s the only difference between the leagues, people may not want to join both of them since they’ll be pretty similar, and I’m not sure we’ll be able to get 40 unique players to fill up two 20 man leagues.

I’m super busy through this coming Thursday, so expect the keeper league to go up by this weekend. Hopefully Friday.

I agree that finding enough for 2 20-man leagues plus all the others would be a stretch. I prefer the serpentine draft format, and would be open to using 2 QBs or an offensive flex position…or both. Think I’ll wait a couple weeks or so, then start a thread to gauge interest and rule options.

Will you post here if you decide to run with it? I would really like to give a 2QB league a shot, and if it is looking like that is the way this league is headed I would like to get on board. But I have a tendency to miss new threads in the game room these days and would hate for it to fill up without me noticing just because I don’t check the forum for new threads regularly.

Sure. I’ll post an announcement in this thread, and link to the thread I’ll start for that particular league. This next week is going to be a killer for me…job interview out of town mid week, and then next Saturday, I fight to save my office from closure at a crucial board meeting, so it will likely be mid-July before I start it. Since we’ve already had two guys express interest in a 2 QB format, plus me, I think we’ll plan on doing that, and talk about other setup options.

I might even consider joining a new league if it’s novel enough and if yahoo upped their limit from 4 per account or it’s non-yahoo. Can’t get enough FF.

Well, FO got back to me with the numbers for 3 & Outs. I’m not going to go back and bug them again to get the Tackles for Loss stats, but that’s probably easier to sample-and-average with a handful of play-by-play logs and Ctrl-F.

Defensive 3 & Outs as a percentage of all drives for 2010 were as follows:

NYJ - 32.3%
SD - 30.9%
CHI - 29.8%
GB - 28.0%
OAK - 27.2%
NYG - 26.3%
SF - 26.1%
WAS - 25.3%
MIA - 25.1%
SEA - 25.1%
STL - 25.1%
CIN - 24.9%
KC - 24.7%
PHI - 24.5%
MIN - 24.4%
JAC -24.4%
PIT - 23.4%
IND - 23.1%
NO - 22.9%
BAL - 22.7%
CAR - 22.3%
DET - 22.2%
ATL - 21.7%
BUF - 21.5%
DEN - 20.6%
DAL - 18.9%
ARI - 18.7%
NE - 18.3%
TEN - 17.7%
CLE - 16.9%
TB - 16.8%
HOU - 16.7%

To get raw totals, you could cross-reference with the number of drives, here. But just to get a quick sense of scale: the Raiders had the most defensive drives with 202, the median was 182/181, and the Saints had the fewest with 166; there weren’t any outliers, it was a pretty smooth curve.

Ok, so the fantasy numbers for last year would look something like this:

Best DEF: 63 3&Os (4 per game)
Average: 44 3&Os (2.75 per game)
Worst: 28 3&Os (1.75 per game)

Of course, in most leagues the bottom 3rd of fantasy defenses don’t really get used, so the effective numbers would be more like:

Best DEF: 63 3&Os (4 per game)
Average: 46 3&Os (2.8 per game)
Worst: 39 3&Os (2.5 per game)
I would’t mind giving DEFs 1 point per 3 & Outs at those numbers, though might be we’d have to scale back the scoring for Points Allowed a touch, so that we keep the same balance between DEF and the other positions.

Agreed. I’m happy that most of the SDMB leagues boost defenses to be roughly on par with other roster positions, but I think for the most part we were successful in that endeavor. Any additional scoring given to defense should be counterbalanced by removing some defense scoring from somewhere else.

3 and outs seems like kind of a pointless scoring metric. If you force a lot of 3 and outs but let the other team score anytime you get a first down…

The same could be said about sacks and turnovers. Anyway, I kinda like the stat. It’s an accomplishment that really belongs to the defense, whereas Points Allowed is, to a surprisingly large degree, sometimes a function of the a team’s offense and special teams (i.e., field position, pace, and turnover rate). Besides, it has a certain smashmouth, “Get the fuck off the field!” appeal. To me, anyhow.

But we’ll see; might be other people feel as you do.

Yeah, but sacks and turnovers are entertaining.
