Fantasy football preseason general discussion

I’ve done quite a few mock drafts. As we head into the middle rounds, Dez Bryant and Miles Austin seem to pop up in the receiver category and I’m not sure i’d really want to take either player. Bryant has the higher upside, but also the knucklehead factor. Austin had a great 2009 season, but what have you done for me lately?

Started league threads for the all pro, auction, and big leagues.

The invitatons all went out weeks ago. I’m going to do a second round. Please make sure you sign up now to ensure you get your slot.

Of course the one league I can brag about we put off.

I don’t want to draft either player, but it’s just because I don’t trust the Cowboys. Austin had a hamstring injury all last year, so his 2010 numbers are a good guide to what you can expect. I don’t know what “knucklehead factor” you’re talking about with Bryant; he’s been pretty much a model citizen as wide receivers go.

I’ll get that up later today. Had to figure out a workable draft date and write up an OP.

I’m just joking, no rush.

Crap, I forgot to create that superleague thread. Tomorrow.

Anyway, Roto Arcade and their crack team of fancypants had a mock draft.

Rounds 1-4. 5-8.

Do you think Gronk or Graham should be drafted first, and where do you think they should go?

Gronk’s injury is a half year out, and he was more productive. He’s also in an offense with more potential, and a bigger use for him. I don’t really see how you could rank Graham above him.

That being said, I don’t see how you could rank him as highly as a lot of online resources suggest, some saying that he could be as high as a first rounder. If I got him in the fourth round, I’d consider him a steal; late third round feels about right.

Can you justify that?

I think people just intuitively think “you can’t draft a tight end that high”, but if you had a wide receiver putting up 1300 yards and 17 TDs a year, you’d feel fine taking him in round 2, right?

Well to say you should take him lower because he’s a TE makes no sense. It’s much harder and rarer to get that level of production from a TE, so that makes him more valuable. If you think he can repeat something in the same area as he did last year, or even improve, he becomes a viable first round option.

Then again, maybe I shouldn’t be telling my competition how to be better at fantasy football :stuck_out_tongue:

The SDMB Super League thread is open for business. My bad on it taking this long.

I know I said it last year but I just don’t see him duplicating his production. Hernandez is always looming, the Pats have a laughable schedule and they are far better at wideout. I’d still take him above Graham, though not before the end of the second.

We’re almost at August. Unfilled slots in SDMB league are going to be up for grabs soon. If you have a pending invite, take it or tell me you’re not interested please.

I sent out my final round of re-invites to the all pro, auction, and big leagues. If they don’t show, and we need replacements, who’s interested in what league?

I’d take Graham over Gronk. He’s more of a focal point of their offense (more catches and a lot more targets), and New Orleans loses a receiver (Meachem) whereas New England gains a receiver (Lloyd). Also, while both teams have new offensive coordinators, NO’s OC, Carmichael, ran the offense last season while Payton was out; whereas McDaniels was in St. Louis. And I don’t think Gronk’s TD numbers are sustainable.

I justify it with the fact that even in the height of their careers, Tony Gonzales and Antonio Gates weren’t first or second round draft picks, despite being top-level receivers at the TE position. Gronk’s season last year certainly was unprecedented, but that also means it probably needs to be duplicated before I start putting that much credence in it. If you assured me anyone at any position (other than a QB, of course) was going to have 17 TDs, I’d take them round one, pick one. But even just knowing someone’s likely going to be a productive receiver doesn’t leave me believeing in a repeat.

I’m interested in the auction or big league. I think I’ve got my feet wet enough to handle two leagues now.

The auction and all pro leagues are full barring a last minute quitter. The big league may have a slot, not sure yet.

Has anyone managed to use an Android or iOS app to draft in a yahoo draft? There are a few apps that say they can, but since it’s all done through a yahoo flash app I’m skeptical.

Is Aaron Rodgers a half of the first round pick? We haven’t really had that situaton since the universal switch to 4 point TDs after Manning destroyed the league in 04. I’ve always thought QBs were somewhat undervalued after the switch, but then going top 5 may be overkill. He’s about a safe a pick as it gets though.

I’ve been thinking an interesting idea for a league would be to have several redrafts during the year. I’d say 4 drafts - one before week 1, before week 4, before week 8, before week 12 would be ideal. You keep your scores, but every player gets reset and you have another live draft.

I think this would be great since drafting itself is fun, you get more data to draft based on (better than preseason speculation), you can try different strategies throughout the year, if a major player goes down with injury, the worst you’ll have wasted is 4 weeks rather than the whole season, and in general it would just be a different experience.

But here’s the practical side: are there any sites that allow anything like this? I suppose we could do a workaround by setting up 4 leagues on the same site, and staggering the draft dates, and then just manually adding the scores together, but I know you can’t do this on yahoo because they stop having drafts at all in October IIRC. Are there any sites that let you draft all the way through week 12? Even mock draft sites, perhaps, that have a live draft app, we could import the results.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think the massive increase in teams using two or even three backs in a RBBC approach has changed fantasy football. Rare indeed are the stud RB’s who carry their team and, with Adrian Peterson, Jamaal Charles, Darren McFadden, Chris Johnson, etc. having injury issues, the pool dries very quickly. And the depth at WR with the focus on the passing game, I think grabbing a stud QB early will become par for the course. I’d still rather draft Foster, Rice, and McCoy as the first three picks, but after that, Rodgers would be right there in the running for the next pick.
