Not sure that there are any fans here, as I don’t recall ever having seen a discussion about it, but even if you’re not a fan you may have heard about the latest flap.
Here’s the Huffington Post report on it, but to sum up: the panel were critiquing the Oscar red carpet fashions and one of the women (Giuliana Rancic) said this" made her feel like it probably smelled like patchouli and weed". The camera was not on the panel during “the weed” comment and initially it was thought that fellow panelist Kelly Osbourne said it. Ms Osbourne, vehemently denies it and went so far as to threaten to quit the show. Rancic issued a full apology and as far as I know the whole thing has been sorted.
I watched the original episode and I thought, as I usually do whenever I see anyone of any ethnicity in dreads, “wow, that hair must reek”. Of course, hers probably doesn’t because I’m sure they’re just a temporary weave. Anyway, the only thing about the comment that stood out to me was its mildness. I haven’t rewatched a clip but I could swear after she said"patchouli" there was a pause and a second voice said “and weed” and then Giuliana said in agreement “and weed”.
What do you guys think? As usual, I’m going to hold off to see if anyone knows / cares what I’m talking about before I ramble further.
Tempest in a teapot. Drums up publicity for the show, lesser-known actress gets her name in the news, it will all be forgotten before Monday’s new show.
Its a show about fashion. About as ephemeral as you can get.
I can see this for the most part, but if I was in the PR department, I might be wondering about the future dynamic between Rancic and Osbourne and maybe even the tone of the show. Does this set the future premise for some serious egg shell walking, lest someone get in a tizzy over a perceived racial slur? This show is all about snark, for crying out loud. Not to mention, Zandaya herself has been on the show, mocking people with the rest of them.
Didn’t Joan Rivers make the entire end of her career about making fun of people on the red carpet?
I agree with Soylent - If you’re going to say someone looks like a dred-head hippie, you’ll say they look like they smell like pachtouli and weed. Nothing to do with race.
Granted, nothing to do with classiness either. And totally out of line because she was on the red carpet, not actually looking like a dred-head hippie.
I agree with all of this. Plus, Kelly just looks like a hypocritical beeotch for throwing her co-star and supposed friend under the bus. I’ve long since gotten sick of her constant sucking up to celebrities that dress in the most inane getups just so she can remain on their party lists. You don’t get to pretend to be the one shining light of virtue on the bitchfest that is FP.
It was a guilty pleasure to watch this show occasionally in the Joan days, but they should never have attempted to continue the show without her. Rancic isn’t interesting and Osbourne has zero gravitas nor fashion credibility, and now, clearly, it’s going to start listing awkwardly toward politically-correct. Ugh. Make it not so.
I opened the image expecting something hippyish- maybe some Indian prints, or messy hair with beads in it, or Birkenstocks or something.
But the picture shows a young woman in a classic evening gown and a neat, elegant hairstyle. Nothing hippyish at all- she was pure red carpet. There just isn’t anything at all about her look that screams “hippy” or “pot smoker.”
So yeah, I’d say the comments were pretty tone deaf. There is enough baggage around hair without people going on TV associating dreadlocks across the board with drug use.
Zendaya accepted the apology, no harm no foul. I don’t see what’s wrong with calling out a comment with more baggage than was likely intended.
I agree. I can’t stand Giuliana anyway, and she rags on celebrities who are her bread and butter. The hypocrisy of then turning around and kissing their asses when she meets them.
What an insightful, relevant, welcome contribution. Please come again when you can’t stay longer.
Don’t know if this is directed toward me, but if so, there’s no ro here dude (or chick), I was just posting a topic about a tv show in a forum about things like tv shows.
This totally cracked me up. Perhaps if Ms. Osbourne makes good on her threat to quit, **salinqmind ** can take her place.
I was actually referring to Kelly’s hypocrisy but you’re right; they’re both two faced bitches:D
I believe the gist of the outrage is that the comment is somehow racist. You may think it furthers the stereotype of dredlocks = drug use, and maybe it does, but I don’t think that’s what Zandaya is trying to claim.
Sorry all that I don’t know how to quote properly to include your names. I think maybe my dreds are too tight
At the start of each quote, in the code within the brackets after “quote” immediately add “=username” (with no spaces between the word quote and the = sign). As in (bracket)quote=WOOKIPANUB(bracket).
To get the link to the post, use the quote function at the lower right of the post. For quoting multiple messages first click the ("+) button on each until you get to the last one you want to quote, then hit (quote) there. In the latter cases you have to edit down in the reply.
Ye gods. They’re fashion police, in the first place, so some snark is expected. I am not saying this is a good thing.
My friends and I love to watch the Oscars and snark on people’s clothes. This year we did not like Lady Gaga’s first gown because it looked damned uncomfortable even given that comfort is not the point, and we thought Patricia Arquette should have made some time to visit a hairstylist like everybody else, and enough of JLo’s boobs, but other than that, not that much was snarkworthy.
So I don’t blame them for going low. “Patchouli and weed” is not racist. Not terribly clever either. But hey, they are supposed to cross the line. Somebody has to cross it.
Kelly O will not quit the show because otherwise they might snark on her, and she is one of the most eminently snarkable “celebrities” ever.
I think the “racism” comes from the idea that African-Americans have fought pretty hard, over the course of decades, to make “natural” black hairstyles socially acceptable, and the whole thing is still pretty sensitive to some people. Dreadlocks are one of a handful of natural hairstyles, and so saying they are just across the board unacceptable for formal occasions seems a little regressive.
esven (sorry, I couldn’t resist seeing that this is a celebrity related thread:) ),
don’t know if you’re aware that Zandaya is a fashionista / tv personality of some sort.
I could be mistaken, but I’m almost positive her dreads are fake. She wears a different wig pretty much every day of the week so it’s not like she’s expressing her lifestyle or just being herself. In other words, they are part of a costume, worn to be edgy and elicit a response. She’s been on the show herself (judging others), and knows exactly what it’s about. That’s really the point of my OP; that there’s this manufactured drama over a non-event and I wondered if anyone else who was aware of it saw the ridiculousness and hypocrisy of everyone involved. I see now that the way I phrased it sounds like I think the initial claim has merit, but I just wrote it that way as a sort of tongue in cheek way to make it interesting. Fail on my part.
