Project Runway 9/10 (And Models of, as well)

Do you feel like you have the kitty-cat in you?

(how

space?)
Well, it was another boring challenge in Project Runway-land. If I see another cute little cocktail dress, I think I’m gonna puke.

Loved Epperson’s look for Matar. Perfect. Or should I say purrrfect? (Ha!) And I thought her tits looked just fine.

Althea’s outfit must have looked much better in person than on TV. 'Cause it looked like the proverbial hot mess to me.

I’m very glad that Qrystal was auf’d. I don’t know what was worse, that her dress looked like something off of the clearance rack at Marshall’s or that she totally plagiarized that diagonal back strap from Ra’Mon’s neoprene horror from last week.

Models of was fun as usual, but it was extremely boring watching a zillion interviews with Valerie graciously discussing the prospect of going home again. Glad that we got a break from Fatma drama. I wanted to slap Tanisha, though. What an arrogant jerk.

ETA–Attempted to insert rollover space. Failed.

I agreed with the auf-- Qristyl’s dress looked wrinkly and unfinished, not to mention boring. She was in over her head and it was time to go. It’s only sad because of Valerie leaving. Logan was openly flirted with by that annoying judge who dresses Angelina Jolie, so I knew right then he was in no danger of elimination.

However, I did not see what was sooo great about Althea’s. The judges said Epperson’s lacked support, but damn was Tanisha bouncing around in there, and she actually has a rack that needs support, unlike Matar. To me, it was just a meh little suit, nothing great.

All the designers who were “safe” this week had the interesting looks, like Louise, Shirin, and Gordana. I even liked Nicolas’. I just do not get the judges’ taste this season, at least when it comes to the winners. I generally agree with the eliminations.

As for the models, I agree with Green Bean: Tanisha is conceited as hell, and the “Dream Team” needs to get real. I felt bad for Valerie getting kicked off AGAIN even though she’s beautiful and classy; I hope she did book a job for Ed Hardy at that party. It seems like Fatma and Louise are getting along and she’s only a little bitter about Logan being with Kojii (she of the baby named Cree Sequoia and the Hot Topic taste in dresses).

Cree Sequoia!! I didn’t catch that. Oy vey.

“This is my daughter, Cree Sequoia Dakota Big Sky Yosemite Goldberg.”

I agreed–Althea’s needed serious support. I thought Althea’s was a good idea but executed really poorly.

I also thought that Shirin and the other woman (was it accented lady? I don’t remember, need to go back and look) had better dresses, but whatever.

Too much crying. There’s no CRYING in fashion.

I don’t get the judges this season. This is the second week in a row where the dress I thought was the ugliest & most poorly made ended up winning.

I think they’re going out of their way to choose the ugly ones to fuck with us. Then they can rear up at the end of the series and say, “SEE?! THIS IS THE INDUSTRY! THIS IS HOW WE MADE YOU THINK LEG WARMERS, JUMP SUITS, AND MAXI DRESSES WERE SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE OPTIONS!”

Oh, noooo, honey.

If you recut all the bits where someone is hysterically sobbing on PR from past seasons, you could have an hour long show. And that’s the bits they aired.

True…the crying just gets so old, though! I hate all this emotion.

The model show is really growing on me, though. This show is so much better than Top Model, and Heidi’s way more watchable than Tyra Banks. Is that damning with faint praise?

Which model went home? I saw but I didn’t really know who any of the models were at that point. I’ve just seen all the episodes on the web and now I think I know more of who they are. So…who was it this ep?

What was the problem of the woman judge (the one whose claim to fame involved Angelina Jolie, but probably not in a good way)?

I think it was when Qrystal’s dress was going down the runway, modeled by Valerie. This judge asked the client if she liked the dress, to which the model replied “I love it!” Aforementioned judge then said something to the effect of “Well, you’re wrong” and “that’s why models are not designers” or some other very cruel bitch-slap. I figured the designer would at least get credit for pleasing her client. I know in a previous show the judges made much of the designers who didn’t please their clients.

ETA: Freudian, the model who went home was Valerie. This is the second time she has been sent home.

Qristel lost, in a gracious mannerly way. Refreshing. I like her spirit and dignity.
In past challenges I didn’t care for her designs so much. Her losing design I rated as just O.K.
Still that put her ahead of 3 or 4 others.
It seems the judges put the designers’ past presentations into the mix when judging the current design.

When that judge (Jolie’s dresser) jumped Q, then pounced on Q’s model: WOW.
It went like this:
Judge, with pointy chinned mean look, “why of all the fabrics that exist would you choose…what is that? a black jersey or something?”
Q, begins calmly giving the details of her fabric choice but is cut off.
Heidi, “Valerie do you like your dress?”
Valerie, smiling and openly happy, “yes, I do…” WHEN she’s cut off.
Judge, “That’s why Valerie’s not a designer, right?” Valerie sheepishly smiles as the Judge states, “Thank God (you are not a fashion designer.)”

Does anyone need this Judge’s behavior?
Part of the stated challenge was to make “the 13 women” (who ended up being the regular models) happy.
Project Runway judges have always chosen to overlook or conversely harp on their stated design criteria in a capricious manner; as if to qualify/disqualify designers at will.
The arrogant, rude behavior of this particular judge is the icing and cherry atop that cake.

I have been really impressed by the designers so far this year. I think Althea’s dress was the best, but there were some very nice ones there.

Qristyl’s was boring, so that was what got her auf’d. I think hers, Logan’s and Johnny’s looked like something that anyone could wear and look decent in. That wasn’t part of the challenge, the challenge was make your model stand out, and those designs didn’t cut it.

I’m surprised Christopher squeaked by, his dress wasn’t all that great and I thought he would be bottom three.

Now that I’ve watched the designers audition tapes I really have some favorites, Gordana, Louise, Qrystal and Logan.

Nicholas seemed a shoe in for the show with his industry connections, he has an interesting background, Soviet born, London raised, and son of two serious NASA scientists. Gordana also had an interesting childhood, a fashionista in former Yugoslavia her Mom used to burn her clothes because she was so different and getting the wrong kind of attention.

Ugh. I agree–that was mean. She could have phrased it more nicely but I guess she was going for the Devil Wears Prada Anna Wintour. I feel like Michael or Nina would have said something like, “There’s a balance between pleasing your client and going too far” without getting overly bitchy.

Aww! I liked her. She was really good.

She might as well have asked Valerie “did you stop beating your wife?” She was setting her up, plain and simple. There is really no excuse for that.

It wouldn’t normally be a lose-lose question. It was only the guest judge’s response that made it so.

When asked “do you like the dress,” Valerie had the choice of being diplomatic or trashing the dress. She wisely chose diplomatic, because normally, there would have been no benefit in NOT being diplomatic. Saying you like the dress doesn’t mean that you love the dress and are dying to wear it to the event. The dress was decent enough that expressing a mild positive opinion wouldn’t indicate that Valerie had bad taste, but only that she wouldn’t take every possible opportunity to trash her designer.

The guest judge should have understood this. Or maybe she did understand it and was just angling for a sound bite.

If she really wanted to get a sense of Valerie’s personal taste (and why would she?) she should have asked a follow-up question: “Would you choose to wear this to the industry event?” And Valerie could have said something like “No, because I don’t think it would make me stand out enough,” which would show that she evaluated the dress correctly without forcing her to throw Q under the bus.

Besides, Q’s dress wasn’t even that bad! It wasn’t hideous or even really inappropriate. It was just boring and frumpy and blah.

Q had already secured the loss. That guest judge was just rubbing salt in the wounds. I know people think Nina is overly harsh, but she sure doesn’t do crap like that.

I agree with your whole assessment, Green Bean. Obviously a designer doesn’t want to work with a model who throws them under a bus, especially since the models were the clients in this challenge. So she couldn’t say, “No, I hated it,” very well. But I do think that that judge was angling for the “This is why you’re not a designer” soundbite.

I figured Q would go home because they seem to really hate safe, even though her dress was better than Logan’s. I did think there were a lot worse dresses on the runway that could have been in the bottom three than Q’s.

You know, one of the reasons it sounded SO horribly nasty was that it was a total non-sequitur. Unless it was edited out, Valerie never claimed to be a designer. She never said she wanted to be a designer. Why was she being dinged for (apparently) not having good enough taste to be a designer?

If the guest judge had that comment in mind going into this thing, she may have been expecting some of the models to say things indicating that they knew better than the designers. It might have been appropriate in that context. But the models didn’t do that. Just the opposite.

I’m sure the judges have a few pithy comments in mind before the runway show. It only makes sense to prepare some material even for an ad-lib situation. But it’s pretty stupid to try and shoe-horn in some comment, even if you think it’s good sound-bite material.

Yeah it was very nasty. I want Kors and Nina back ASAP.

The felt unpleasantly like Heidi inviting her friends for a little party.

I think she’d probably have been okay if she wasn’t so consistently weak. Four shows in, she’s been in the bottom three times. A boring dress is never good, but on top of a few looks of…shall we say debatable taste…it’s the kiss of death.

The really sad part is that even her most questionable looks on the show are classier than a lot of the stuff on her website. Some it’s nice, or would be in different fabrics, but a fair bit of it would be too tacky for the love child of Vegas Elvis and Liberace. The overall feeling I get is that she loves bold, vibrant colors and patterns and showing some skin, but she has trouble figuring out where the line is between vibrant and garish and between sexy and trampy.

The winning outfit was a decent design but did not fit well, her boobs were falling out of her undershirt, and the skirt thing was way too short.

Qrystal might have deserved to go home, but boy did it seem like Heidi has had it out for her since the previous episode.

The one judge was really rude to the model. That was totally unnecessary.

I was surprised at the number of wrinkled outfits. Are there no irons in the dressing room?
