Fashions You Wish Would Make a Comeback

1920’s Scots-style golfing suits in rough tweed, with a belt on the back of the coat and plus-four trousers.

Worn with a matching “newsboy” cap.

And Argyle sox.

What kind of shoes would one wear with that, I wonder? Two-toned bucks?

I would NOT want togas back in fashion. They’re huge unwieldy pieces of fabric, and even the Romans wouldn’t wear them if they had to do anything actually involving movement, such as fighting, or working, or even eating.

Me? While I’d probably hate it, I think the “women wearing pretty dresses every single day” fashion was pretty cool. No need for an excuse to dress up, you’re just permanently dressed up.

One thing that I don’t “miss,” but think is utterly cool is this: I hang out with my buddy (who lives in midtown Manhattan) on Sundays. When we go to eat, or to the movie theater, or whatever, we inevitably run into older gentlemen and ladies who are dressed to the nines (or have put on the suits that they own from their younger days). Why are they all dressed up with nowhere to go? Because it’s SUNDAY. And that’s cool.

A whole day, every week, to doll yourself up and just walk around. A way to just take pride in yourself. Super cool.

Another Fedora wearer here!

Leather skirts.

Those short skirts with high stockings and clips that attached the two (OK, OK, I’m a perv  ).

Hot Pants when worn properly were an absolute treasure! Bring 'em back!

PARACHUTE PANTS!

Preach it, brother! I didn’t realize how honkin’ ugly those big baggy shorts were until they were showing clips from old games during the NBA playoffs. I want men in little shorts again!

What would I like to see come back?

Leotards with spandex pants, legwarmers and white princess Reebok hightops.

Or…eighties Metalhair…esp on guys. drools thinking about the number of guys she dated back then with the big honkin hair

Makeup on guys…who are straight.

I was putting out resume’s at big dept stores today (macy’s, Foley’s, etc) and got to see some of the ‘back to school’ fashions like the black tights with the holes already in them how lame is that? Are they too lazy to cut their own damn holes now? :dubious: and the vintage retro-style tees with things written on them and my favorite, the Avril-style arm warmers that are REALLY just tube socks with the end cut off…

Can’t ya tell I dispise this ‘faux punk’ that all the kids are into these days?

A vote for the Carnaby St look here, mods and all that!

So glad to see this post – just got back in from what was a nice afternoon out, and I enjoy wearing my own vintage Carnaby clothes – a nice ‘Twiggy’ frock today, you know, orange cotton with yellow stripes, vertical on the skirt, horizontal across the empire bust, long sleeves, and a pair of black lace up suede boots (only because my white multi-buckle go go boots haven’t arrived yet)…and yup, met with snickers, double takes, and ‘Isn’t it early for Halloween?’

On the other hand, a pal and I just wound our way through ‘Beyond the Valley of the Dolls’ recently, a tremendous hoot, and she remarked, ‘What was scary about that film was, having been your friend all these years, I suddenly realised that I didn’t find the clothes, decor, or music dated!’ (And she loves wearing pencil skirts and veiled hats when we go out just for pizza!)

And people have stopped me to tell me they like my clothes, and seeing something different, and where on earth do I find this stuff.

I intend to keep a-wearing my Twiggy clothes, my leather skirts, and my stripey tights!

On the subject of fedora’s…

I’ve been wanting to pick one up for a while, because I think they are cool as hell. Where exactly does one get one though? Although I haven’t really looked hard, I’ve never really seen them around in stores, otherwise I would have picked one up on impulse long ago.

Spats.

The new bling bling.

Hats in general.
I can actually wear hats, assuming I can find one that fits (I have a huge head). If hats came back they’d start making them in sizes again rather than “one size fits all” and I could wear them.

Also, guys look great in hats.

Gloves.
I like gloves. It’s silly, but I like gloves.

Corsets.

Nice slender, non-clunky heels.
Shoes for the past decade have been ugly and getting uglier. Huge, nasty, clunky, horrid things. I miss nice dressy pumps with slender tapered heels. One of the few fashion item the 80s did right - the colors were hideous, but the shape was wonderful. ((I am glad I was in high school then, where bigger and more oversized was better, I feel sorry for teenage girls today for whom stylish is low cut jeans and belly shirts.))

I can deal without flowy things or wrap wear…I am one of those few women who look horrible in them. (Assuming I can get them to stay on at all. I’m just proportioned wrong for both of those styles.)

Oh, and GrandfatherTrout, I do see UtiliKilts not infrequently.

I want the '80s back. I really wanted to go to high school wearing tight acid-washed jeans, neon socks, and red high heels. I also really love loud bright colors and look good in them, if I do say so myself. Sadly, by the time I got to high school, grunge had hit. And nowadays the colors in clothes are so muted, I hate it. No more beige/brown/black for me, please!

I still sometimes wear an oversized men’s suit jacket as a coat in the fall. I like the pseudo-menswear thing from the '80s, too–minus the huge shoulderpads, of course.

I would wear a hooded cloak all the time if I could get away with it.

Agh…don’t bring back bad memories. When I was in jr. high choir, not only were the required uniforms UGLY ( a deep hideous shade of purple not unlike that of the dreaded Barney) but they had shoulderpads that made us girls look like had shoulders like a freaking linebacker.

Don’t forget the faux-punk shirts with safety pins pre-stuck in the sleeves. Ahh, the glorious stink of mallgoth in the morning! ;j

Ohhh yeah, SockMunkey! I love the flowing medieval styles… gown and kirtle, with the great jewelry and headdresses  I’d love to see designers adapt Camelot-era dresses to today’s fabrics. I bet all those yards of flowing fabric would hide a multitude of figure sins

Hmm, maybe that’s a summer project worth considering; sew my own 21st century-medieval dress for street wear. We have a sewing machine, and Mom could show me the ropes…

OK- Otto, I understand that you and I want to see different things, but there are too many men with pale, tiny quads. As a guy who takes pride in his work, I will tell you this: Shorts should be above the knee, yes, but they should only go as far as the lower bulge in the quadriceps muscle. You know what I mean. Any higher exposes the unsexy ultrawhite inner thigh- and you need two 10-minute-tan sessions to fix that. Even then, it’s DEFINITION that counts.

IDBB- Wish I met you before I cut it all off. You sound fun, and regardless, I’m sure you would have had something good to say about my coif at the time. Rock on, kid.

Deth- Leather skirts have never gone out- the “cojones factor” to wear them has just gone up.

Salwar kameez. They are lovely and very, very comfortable.

Hats and gloves, seamed stockings, corsets.

Cloche hats and kimono sleeves. Changing into several different outfits per day-morning gown, day dress, tea gown, dinner gown, evening gown, kimono, nighty.

Guys who dress like the 20th century prior to WWII.

Parasols! You know, they make so much sense-I would have killed for a parasol when I was doing my internship a few years ago and waiting for the bus in 90 degree heat with the sun beating down on me.

Or walking sticks. Oh, and pinc nez glasses.
