The French Dip is my go-to sandwich when I’m there, too.
I really don’t want to think about the au jus – I made the mistake of watching the clerk “make” my au jus once. They have a bunch of the little cups already set up, containing what I’m assuming is powdered beef flavoring, artificial coloring, and salt. She took one of the cups, took the lid off of it, and use the hot-water tap from the coffee maker to reconstitute it, before putting the lid back on.
I would say the top one is a gyro made from real beef/lamb flavored meat cones and white sauce. Though not a fast food chain, many of these gyro shops are fast food so I would say it qualified.
Other ones that hit the mark, McD’s Mc double (no ketchup or mustard), double 1/4 pounder w/ cheese - again no ketchum or mustard but add mac sauce.
BK Wopper or double wopper.
Taco Bell crispy taco
Piece of fried chicken thigh from any fast food place.
Arby’s beef and cheddar, although that one is running on memories as it is often a disappointment as I expected more from it.
I’ll pretty much second everything mentioned here so far except Taco Bell, Arby’s, and the Whopper. I will especially second the White Castle jalapeno cheeseburger.
Which, reminds me, back when McDonald’s had the discount menu jalapeno McDouble, holy shit was I addicted to it. So much so that I got to the point where I was rating in my head how well they were made at various McD’s locations and which locations did a better job than others. For a burger that didn’t last that long, I ate a lot of those cheap, delicious suckers.
Yeah, I think they used to do that part back in the kitchen. I remember the first time I saw the counter person make it I felt pretty  too. Really, as with all fast food, the less seen the better.
Years ago either McDonalds or Burger King had the most wonderful little snacks, forgot what they were called, a soft flour tortilla with a bit of cheese, strands of marinated chicken, lettuce and tomato. Two were too much to eat, but one wasn’t enough. OH, they were so simple, tasty, craveable! Long gone …Then Dunkin Donuts started selling chicken salad on a toasted croissant, and THAT became my dream fast food. Also long gone :(… The only fast food I still crave, and always have, is the Whopper Jr. Now it’s $3! Still my favorite.
#1 Grandy’s chicken fried steak. It is BAD, Bad, bad for me in many aspects, but I love it.
2 Burger King’s original chicken sandwich. Something about the lettuce and the chicken that just tastes like nothing else.
3 Taco Bueno combo burrito. I get one and eat it on the way home. It’s messy as hell, and I have burrito sauce all over the steering wheel when I get home. Do I care? No! Sometimes I get two just so I can have one the next day at work for lunch.
I’m surprised how many people are saying they like Bell instead of Bueno.
McD’s hamburgers and fries
BK’s hamburgers and onion rings
Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich
Arby’s classic roast beef with mustard
The craving that I rarely get to assuage is for Donato’s pepperoni pizza, they are in the Midwest and I now live in the Seattle area. But I was so excited to see that they have entered into a collaboration with Red Robin and their pizzas are being sold there, in just a few locations so far. I hope so much that they come to the Seattle area! They really should, I think they would clean up. The pizza out here sucks imo.
Now i want arbys … i used to get about 2 arbyq’s and 2 beef and cheddar and large curly fries …
And yeah even at jack in the box you have to get the curly fries a size bigger than you want because half of them are the burnt end and pieces …
Oh and the one thing it might be a good thing they never let me order it is domins bbq chicken pizza… I order mine like a normal pizza so i take off the onions and add mushrooms …
What I really jones for is another reason I boycott Arby’s: The Arby-Q. I love that sandwich! But since they dropped it from the standard menu and got rid of their fries, there is just no reason to go back. But I still crave that sandwich and fries.
Of places I do go to, the one that has a craving attached to it is McD’s. Sometimes you just gotta have a Big Mac.
Close to 500 miles for me. They are only in 10 states.
McD’s Filet o’ Fish is another of mine, and they are making me crazy with all the advertising now due to Lent. I’ll probably break down and give in to the craving this weekend. I even had a nice fish sandwich from a nice pub recently but it still isn’t the same as the little square one from McD’s.
As long as we’re talking about items no longer available, I miss the hell out of the steak & egg bagel sandwiches McDonald’s used to offer. They were topped with a spread (mostly mayonnaise, I’m sure) that made the whole thing exquisite.
Y’all talking about White Castles are making me crave White Castles! Unfortunately I am not planning a trip to St. Louis any time soon. I may have to try the frozen ones from the grocery store.
Or maybe I just need to stop by Popeyes on the way home tonight and grab some spicy chicken strips with their Mardi Gras mustard dipping sauce. That might do the trick.
My hometown used to have a U.K.-themed fish & chips place called Chappy’s*. I still miss the fried fish.
*Google suggests it may have been Cedric’s. I can’t say for sure whether these shops were related and if so how. I remember the one near my house being Chappy’s.
