Oh I’m well aware of that. I’m an hour and a half away from Cincy and my kid lived there for 5 years. It’s just that if you go to a “Chili Cookoff” you don’t expect to find this type of Chili.
Skyline is much better than the other main Cincy place Gold Star, or Steak ‘n’ Shake’s version or the Detroit Coney Islands I’ve tried.
My point was more that the typical Chili debate is beans or no beans vs. 3 way or 5 way.
Seconding emphatically all the LJS love here. I actually think it is good, and puts out better fish & chips than some pubs I’ve been to. No idea why it gets such a bad rep. When there used to be one by my house, the fish always came out perfectly crispy on the outside, without being sopping wet from grease, and tender and flaky on the inside. They even had malt vinegar before people knew what the hell to do with malt vinegar. And, yes, those little battered “crunchies” – delicious. I want to learn how to make exactly the type of batter they use for their fish. I’ve tried various tempura-type variations (I’m guessing the batter has some cornstarch in it, given its crispiness), but I haven’t quite gotten it exactly right. If I have one complaint, it is that their fish/batter is perhaps a tad oversalted. Other than that, great stuff.
Yeah, I don’t know what the hell it is about them, and I sure do love them at 6am. Thank god for Jack when you’re hung over. I turn them over in the bag so the greasy, saucy goodness goes thru to the top of the “taco” shell.
weinerschnitzel …yall need those back east … the burgers and dogs plain aren’t much but once ya put the chilli and cheese on it it all comes together ,
on and tommies but ours closed down and I’m craving their triple-decker gut bomb …
Ours was chili and cheese on each patty and they stacked them 3 high … I used to eat 2 at a time plus chili cheese fries …
Most consistently eaten fast food: Chick-fil-A tenders with Chick-fil-A sauce.
Most consistently craved fast food: Big Macs. I’m a lover of 1000 Island Dressing.
The fast food craving I can’t seem to get rid of: Burger King’s Classic Chicken sandwich. Almost no one makes a sandwich like it any more; slathered with extra mayo and pickles, it’s heaven.
The most nostalgic fast food craving: Carl’s Jr. Famous Star, extra mayo, extra pickle (no cheese, please). My wife (now ex-) managed a CJ’s and that was soooooooo my go-to meal for a few years.
The fast food craving that I’m most happy to have: In’n’Out Burger double cheeseburger. I’ll scratch that itch quite happily.
This. I know it’s not Mexican food, but I get occasional cravings for Taco Bell tacos. It is not a craving for Mexican food. It’s just a craving for Taco Bell tacos.
I’ve never had a White Castle burger. I like big, sloppy burgers with lots of stuff (I grew up on Mago’s avocado chili cheeseburgers and Apple Pan hickory burgers), so sliders don’t have a lot of appeal for me.
Does the Cincinnati chili have cinnamon in it? I thought I’d heard that, and it sounds good. As you said, not “real” chili, but tasty. Kinda moussaka-ish?
I’ve never had a craving for anything at McDonald’s. I haven’t been to one in decades except to get either a coffee or a coke on a road trip. I find their burgers almost anti-tasty. I’d eat almost any other fast food before McD’s…well, maybe Arby’s would be at the bottom. Mystery meat doesn’t even begin to convey the nastiness of their so-called roast beef.
I’ve had other sliders, and it’s the slider design (for lack of a better word) that I don’t care for. So, if I’m going for a greasy fast food burger, I’ll go for a full-sized one.
Can I contribute a junk food, rather than fast food, craving? At the end of the day, it’s all about the salt/grease/carbs/convenience, right? So my craving is: Fritos corn chips.
I generally like the food I make myself best, and so don’t feel any interest in most of the fast food offerings listed in this thread. But then there are Fritos. Sometimes in the grocery store, they softly yet urgently call my name. Who am I to resist?
And I had no idea “crunchies” was a common term, either. That’s all I could think of in my previous post to describe them. “Fried batter flakes” does sound a bit more menu-worthy, though.
My cravings:
McD’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese (plain)
McD’s fries
BK Whopper (not very often anymore–they aren’t as good as they used to be)
KFC original recipe (ditto–I used to love the stuff but now it’s a salty, mushy mess)
Popeye’s mild chicken (mmmmm…)
Those are the ones I can satisfy easily. I also get frequent cravings for Port of Subs sandwiches, but there isn’t one within a hundred miles of me, so that one doesn’t get satisfied very often, sadly. I love them far more than any other fast-food sub.
Here in the UK, fried chicken is essentially KFC. There are some others, but nobody would realistically claim that they’re anything other than pretenders to KFC’s crown. A lot of Brits, therefore, when they want fried chicken, have no experience of fried chicken which is actually, y’know, good…so they want KFC.
I do have experience of decent fried chicken, and if that’s what I want, I’ll fry it myself (and damn it will be good)…but if I want KFC, then I don’t care how good my (or anybody else’s) chicken may be: I want KFC.
