Fat, subhuman slob exploits 9/11 tragedy for ATTENTION

On the basis of the content of that article, she appears to be a mentally-disturbed person. I feel both angry at her for distress she must have caused others (imagine how it would feel to have some woman claiming she was due to marry your now-deceased son?) but also sadness for her.

Oh, and to those getting riled about the wording used by the OP - I always figure that before you’re going to be offended by something, take a look at the person saying it, then decide whether it’s worth being offended by such a person. Me, I’m not gonna bother being offended…

Re: Tania Head
I have a low opinion of somebody who would make extraordinary statements just to get undeserved attention.

I would like to chime in that I thought the tread was going to be about Giuliani as well.

Instead we get a pile on about using “fat slob” as a pejorative. Talk about bait and switch.

I just can’t believe people bought that sob story- her dream fiancee died in the tower is so clearly a fanatsy- not because she’s morbildy obese, though. And again not focusing on her weight, but didn’t anyone question how someone of her ample frame was able to escape from the 90th or whatever floor, through a big hole in a couple of the floors, in so short a time, when only 19 others did?

Exactly.

Well don’t change the bow you wear in your hair. It was cute as all get out.

I just sort of assumed that she ate her way out the side of the building, then rolled down the side of the structure, using her fat as a sort of ablative armor.

lobstermobster, while I think that the OP was a little over the top, I wouldn’t have responded to this thread, nor done more than added another mark to my personal tally board of reasons I’ll be happy when VCO3 finishes his stay on the Dope, without his comments from post #3.

None of my anger with VCO3’s comments are in any way a defense of Ms. Head. She’s quite detestable for her actions.

The fact, however, that he chose to dehumanize her in the OP for her appearance and that he equates obesity with severe mental illness does piss me right the fuck off.

And that you’re defending him pisses me off further, because I thought better of you. It’s not that he called her fat - it’s because he views her obesity as an equal reason to vilify her as her attention whoring, that I believe has most of the ire in this thread directed at him. It’s certainly what’s got my attention.

Feel free to Pit any fat person who might have wronged you. Before you describe that person as being fat, however, I’d ask, is the obesity relevant to the Pitting? Just as I’d hope you might do when Pitting someone who were Mexican, a lawyer, or any other specific adjective.

Here’s an excellent example of the use of a racial descriptor in a Pitting, where it was absolutely necessary to what happened[sup]1[/sup]. Here’s an excellent example of Pitting someone who’s fat for something they did, but which left a lot of people wondering what the fuck her size had to do with anything of consequence to the Pitting.
Oh, in the interest of full disclosure: I am morbidly obese.

I do think that those people who’ve tried to draw a comparison between ‘fat’ and ‘nigger’ are going a bit too far. It’s not that I don’t think the word ‘fat’ is often a weapon to de-humanize people, it’s just that ‘nigger’ is really, IMNSHO, in a class by itself, between the history, the inability to change the condition, and the complete dehumanization it often encompassed.

I’d much prefer people simply use the word with precision and care - as a descriptor of body or health, not as a label of worthlessness. The word isn’t in the wrong, it’s the attitudes of some of the people who use it.

  1. Which isn’t to say that lobstermobster is wrong to suggest that there are offenderatti who will respond to any descriptor if it annoys them, no matter how vital it might be to what’s being reported. There certainly were people who got up Askia’s ass over this thread and title.

On preview: Wee Bairn, you may be making a couple of incorrect assumptions. First, there’s no reason to claim with certainty, based on that article, that she massed as much then as she does now.

Secondly, not everyone who is obese is necessarily out of shape. It would be the way to bet, of course, but you’d definately lose some of your wagers. At one point I maxed out the military’s PRT for my age group while I was officially obese (24-26% bodyfat), and ran several more fit-appearing persons into the ground doing so.

Agreed. lissener is not always well-loved on the boards, but when he speaks a clear truth, he’s well worth listening to. As well, on the rare occasion when VCO3 acts like an adult, he’s a real asset to the boards. As opposed to a real asshat.

And I’d like to echo that fat != slob. Personally, I’m neither. I’ve lost 55 pounds recently, and you’re all invited to my place, once I shovel out the dead cats and old pizza boxes.

I was thinking ‘WTF? Fat? What the hell does that have to do with anything?’ when I read the OP. Good to know I’m not the only one. I’m fit, but it’s hard not to notice that ‘fat’ (or ‘fat slob’ or ‘fat bitch’) is still an acceptable slur even when it’s coming from out of the blue.

Beat you by 45 minutes yesterday. :stuck_out_tongue:

lobstermobster probably hasn’t been here long enough to realize that there are offenderati here who will get their knickers bunched over any and everything. I think most of us just learn to tune them out.

(Great post, by the way.)

I liked Mighty Girl’s “9/11 By Proxy.” I have a feeling we’ll be hearing more about that.

I’ve started a new thread on the original topic, because I would like to have a proper discussion about it.

I wasn’t trying to imply that the word “fat” was insulting under any and all circumstances, as is “nigger.” What I was saying was, if VC03 had spent most of his OP insulting Tania Head for being black, it would have been offensive to black people in general. As it happened, he spent most of his OP insulting her for being fat and Southern, which naturally enough is going to be generally offensive to people who are fat and/or Southern. That’s the only level at which I was comparing the two words, and at that level, I think the analogy is entirely workable.

I’ve just now read the OP, and only the OP, but I’m going to make a fearless prediction that the 92 replies so far are going to be 100% behind VCO3 and his assessment of this woman, with nary an accusation of trolling in the bunch.

Boy, talk about being wrong.

What about…and this is just a secnario I’m trying on for size…

Ok, it’s clear that the woman’s weight doesn’t directly have anything to do with her making up the story. But lets say she were right here in front of me, and we were able to rant to her instead of just on the message board, which I’m sure she doesn’t read.

So if that’s the situation, and I’m ranting at her, given that the goal is to hurt her…to make her feel bad, and that a lot of fat people are sensitive about their weight, wouldn’t it make sense to throw “fat” in as an insult? Or, for that matter, “nigger” or “faggot”. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being fat, or black, or gay, but if your goal is to hurt someone’s feelings, you hit at their insecurities. So, would that be ok?

Would you do it if your fat, gay black friend were in the room with you, listening to everything you say? If your playing off her insecurities, you’re going to be playing off his insecurities, too. If insulting her for those qualities is going to hurt her, it’s got the same chance of hurting him, too.

Personally, I think it would be childish. But I’ve met a few people that were so repulsive in their personalities that I figured anything was fair game.

These days, if I meet someone like that, I feel more pity than revulsion.

Nope. Collateral damage if a friend with the same insecurities is in the room - if you are calling them these things to hurt them, it’s implied that these things you call them are a bad trait - see what I mean? By calling them “fat, black, or gay” to make them feel BAD, it implies that YOU find “fat, black, or gay” to be bad as well. I hope I’m making sense.

Well, you know, there’s a certain amount of utility and perhaps even charm, to just busting out with the occasional “FAT SLOB!” OP, rather than carefully laying the foundation for a troll flameout or something. He sticks to the fundamentals. I can appreciate that.
