I remember a thread where the op went off about a drunk hunch back pissing on his lawn. He caught about the same amount of shit for using the term hunch back as was given here. How many hunch backs do you figure we have in our ranks?

and for that matter, hasn’t anyone ever considered that us slobs do not necessarily want to be linked to fat people. We’re not all fat, or subhuman. I’m so sick of slobs being the last people you can discriminate against without consequences.
Similarly, any poster who makes derogatory remarks about blacks or gays around here will find themselves being dogpiled by quite a few white and/or straight folks. Posts denigrating Islam as a whole tend to draw a lot of fire around around here, too, despite there only being a few Muslim Dopers.
Bottom line is, people who post regularly in the pit like a good fight, and won’t often pass up the opportunity for one when it’s offered.
In that spirit, lobstermobster, considering how you can’t handle being criticized for smoking by a six year old girl, maybe you should shut the fuck up about how oversensitive everyone else around here is.

The problem is that, unlike your examples, being fat is an undesirable trait in and of itself. Also unlike your examples being fat is usually the consequences of your own actions, rather than birth. While you’re probably right in that a lot of posters here like to be outraged on others behalf they are still totally full of shit if they pretend it’s on the same level as racism or religious intolerance.

Once again, that was not the point I was trying to make. What I was trying to show was that, if you insult someone for a particular trait, other people who happen to share that trait and overhear you are also going to get insulted.

What was the name of the Holocaust confabulist a few years ago? He was publicly exposes as not being Jewish, not being a concentration camp victim etc. Sorry, no memory for names. IMS, he was found to be lying because of his crying over his experiences–Holocaust researchers said that survivors do not show strong emotion when talking about their ordeals. His intense emotions made him suspect and his story fell apart. She reminds me of that guy.
IMO, she’s emotionally /mentally troubled. She may have helped some people, but this fed her need first-and it was not an honest need, AFAICT. To me, that is unethical and distasteful. Whenever there is genuineness on one side and deviousness on the other you find manipulation-not a pleasant notion considering the topic. Interesting how she changes first names, and that Stanford has no record of her attending. She may well be an attention whore or Munchausen’s as was mentioned.
Eh-this whole fat thing. She is not physically attractive and that makes her an easier figure of mockery. That is neither laudable or admirable, but there is no denying the fact that she is, indeed, fat. I have no knowledge of her slobbery (slobbishness?).
FTR, I am not fat - by any standard - but going after someone’s looks instead of their behavior, I was offended. It’s a cheap shot and unnecessary. There’s plenty to go after based on her behavior, and no need to ridicule her size, gender, race, etc.
There’s no hierarchy of oppression, and I can see how people who have been called fat, and treated differently because of their size, could very easily equate this mistreatment with racial slurs. I’d imagine it hurts pretty much the same on a personal level. Granted, there’s an entire societal and historical context that’s missing, but it’s a pretty shitty feeling when someone calls you a name based on your phenotype rather than your behavior.
I think VCO3 should have skipped calling her a fat slob and stuck to calling her a panda. In my mind, she really does look like a panda.

In regards to “obesity” (I forget who posted this), BMI is a notoriously poor statistic. If you maxed out your PT in the service, then you weren’t obese. Did the BMI say so? Perhaps.
As for all the people trying to ‘elevate’ “fat” to other purposefully hurtful words…you need hobbies…Can ‘fat’ be an insult…yes (and was in the OP), but it certainly doesn’t have to be.

You know what’s funny, when I clicked on the link to read that article I thought “Man, this woman may be a real cunt if she’s falsely exploited the 9/11 thing for attention… she’s probably nuts…and I can see that she’s fat (not that this really seems to matter to the story)…but I don’t get the slob part. Did they change the picture? Where does slob come in?”
And I read further into the thread to see this issue is already being parsed and reparsed. Either I’m predictable, or we all are. Or something. Heh.
