For example, The Simpsons has a board game named “Ravenous Ravenous Rhinos” and Sabrina the Teenage Witch has a chocolate-flavored drink named “Hey, Over Here!”.
Norbecker beer. I have never actually watched the movie Beer, but “grab your best gal, and whip out your Norbecker” is a great tagline.
What is that a play on, if anything? (My two examples were for “Hungry Hungry Hippos” and “Yoohoo” if it wasn’t clear. I should have been clearer in the OP that I was hoping for names that are riffs on real product names.)
I’ve always liked Nails brand cigarettes from Kevin Smiths View Askewniverce.
I am disappointed that no drug company has picked up rights to the name Provasic for their own anti-atherosclerosis drug.
You may remember Provasic a.k.a. RDU-90 had a sensational if short vogue back in the early '90s when it was marketed by Devlin MacGregor Pharmaceuticals. (“absolutely no side effects”)
I like that in the PBS kid’s series Arthur the kids all get excited about stories set in Pigblisters magic academy.
Bass-o-matic
The Ford Pinto-inspired Salem Flamo.
Slusho! from the world of J.J. Abrams and Cloverfield: a “classic Slush beverage with the special ingredient of Seabed’s Nectar”.
I’ve always wondered what Vitameatavegamin tastes like.
Cars:
- The 6000 SUX
- The Wagon Queen Family Truckster
Not a product but a big box store on Kind of the Hill called Mega-Lo-Mart.
I liked Magnum’s (of pi fame) favorite beer, Old Dusseldorf. It sounds a bit like every midwestern/east coast lager mit einem deutschen Namen, and also like Pittsburg’s Olde Frothingslosh, (the pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom).
Morley’s cigarettes get used a lot. Usually by the bad guys. (they look like Marlburos). It’s not really a clever or funny name, but I always consider what their ads would be like (Same great taste and 1/3 more evil!)
In the 70 before generics became popular (BEER), and before art departments got really creative, a lot of TV shows used a fake beer can that looked similar to a Budweiser but just said “beer”. I spotted them in both red and blue.
Part of my job is to test barcode scanners like you’d use when picking products in a warehouse. I wanted to simulate a pharmaceutical product so I ordered some empty pill bottles and printed labels for Gleemonex (as seen in Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy). I filled them with m&m’s.
I’ve long heard of the impotence remedy called Micoxafloppin or Micoxafailin.
St. Anky Beer from SuperTroopers.
Tastes just like candy!
