Favorite FPS weapons?

DOOM: The Chainsaw

Half-Life: The Crowbar*

Quake, Quake II and Quake3Arena: The Rocket Launcher

All-time favorite is probably the Shrink Gun from Duke Nukem 3D. There’s nothing quite like shrinking your enemy down to the size of a GI Joe and then stepping on them. Unless it’s freezing them and then kicking them so they shatter…

*Entirely because of the following:

(Spoiler alert)

Thanks. I think my online name is ‘player’ or ‘bobob’ or something stupid. (I didn’t want valuable playing time thinking of a name)

I’ll rename myself to Lobsang.

And apparently I don’t want to spend valuable posting time finishing sentences.

Only one mention of Halo… how pitiful.

Pistol of course, since it “F’in pWnz0rs j00!”
But the needler is most fun. Nothing is more satisfying than unloading a clip of needles onto an unsuspecting player and getting to yell “Needle Kill!” afterwards.

Gonna try to make a list actually, from the best to the slightly less best:

1: Double barrel shotgun in Doom 2, for that ridiculously deep KABLAM!!! Hell, even the reloading sound is cool. 10 years later, there’s been a lot meaner weapons, but this weapon still defines what ass-kicking sounds like. Also fun to use, requiring you to pretty much touch the enemy with the tip of the shotgun before pulling the trigger. Killing just about anyone in one shot up close, you could blow an enemy to kingdom come, step right through the mincemeat that used to be a space marine and be around the corner before the bloody chunks even hit the floor. Good times, good times.

2: The modified MP5 from Half-Life, for letting me fill an entire room of enemies with bullets and then blow them away with a barrage of grenades without skipping a single beat. I pretty much used that weapon all through the campaign, untill I ran out of ammo. So I didn’t get to use it much. My definite weapon of choice if I was ever lucky enough to stand between earth and hordes of aliens bent on destruction.

3: Shrink Ray from Duke Nukem 3D. You know why.

4: Light sabers from Jedi Knight 2. Perhaps more so the dual sabers in Academy. Ludicrously unfun to play with, rendering you so powerful the game wasn’t even remotely challenging anymore. You could leave the game in an area chock full of enemies, go eat dinner and return not having taken a single point of damage. Killed everything faster and easier than any other weapon in the game. Light saber duels had no debth, no finesse, just random clicking and running.
But my GOD were they cool. Anything else about them just becomes a non-issue, those things ROCKED!

5: And then we have the otherwise fairly unremarkable game, Shadow Warrior. The nuke. A blast so gigantic that the hardest thing about using it was not killing yourself. You had to send it flying and basically go hide behind a wall or inside a building. It killed everything. Complete with giant mushroom cloud filling the skies. I remember nothing about this game except the exact design, complete with details, about the areas where I got to use my nuke. Imprinted on my mind forever. Holy shit.

6: Rocket launcher from Quake. As a weapon it was so overpowered it quickly became pretty dull, but it lands the fourth place because of that beautiful piece of game-design oversight known as rocket jumping. Added a whole new dimension to fps gaming.

7: Counter-strike’s AWM. Just for knowing how unbelievably frustrating it is for an enemy to be killed in one shot by an enemy so far away that he couldn’t even see me. Totally imbalanced, but truckloads of amusement. The whining alone…

8: Pipebombs, also from Duke Nukem 3D; you could drop 50 of them in an area and blow them all up at the same time, preferably right after someone spawns right in the middle. Barrels of fun. You really can’t go wrong with big-ass explosions.
Honorable mention:
Banana peels in NOLF 2. Again, no real explanation needed.

I agree - the cleric was always my choice when I played with friends. And the best thing about those powered-up mace balls in Heretic was that they could teleport!

I rather liked the powered-up gauntlets from Heretic, too.

Not worry, they’ll get hooked soon enough. I’m gonna go with the Needler too. You can fire that thing, dip to the side and watch the pink sparks explode your enemy. 2nd choice would be the shotgun. Up close, all you need is one shot a Melee attack, and they’re dead.

For Call of Duty, I’ll go with the BAR any day. Light gun (you can run faster), and faster reloading of mags.

Offensive, tsk tsk tsk. The AWM/AWP is, far and away, the cheapest weapon in the history of weapons. The AWM is Scaramanga’s golden gun with a scope. No honor in that one, you see.
In Counter-Strike, my favorite are the Dual Elites. The only thing better than hitting your enemy 8 times and not killing him is hitting him 9 times with the dualies and seeing him fall.

Halo - The shotgun. Lethal at under 5 meters, reasonably accurate up to 40 or 50 meters. Plus it recovers quickly from melee mode and you only need to load one shell to regulate. The pistol is great in multiplayer, but the shotgun is more fun.

Somebody’s pining for Halo guns! I really liked the plasma grenades. They stick to enemies, and depending on where (and who) they’ll react differently. An Elite with one stuck to his hand will shake it madly, on his leg will scream and run around, and on his head will just scream. The little enemies will turn around shouting “get it off!” and usually run striaght into their friends. Heh heh heh.

Somebody mentioned C&C Renegade, and here’s another from that game: the Ion Cannon beacon. Set it, and run like crazy! The Nuke’s good too, but the beam effect is more interesting (though the red sky and ash from the Nuke is impressive).

So many weapons, so little time…

Duke Nukem’s Shrink Ray has got my vote for the coolest concept ever in weapon design. Shrink, chase, SPLAT!! Loads of fun.

The lightsabers in Jedi Knight for sheer badass factor. When you are swinging two differently-colored blades in Jedi Academy, try NOT to smile.

The OICW from Ghost Recon was the most versatile weapon in the game (no fair counting mods). The OICW is listed as one of the available weapons in Far Cry - I haven’t gotten to it yet, but I’m looking forward to it!

SHit! I completely forgot. I got home and finished watching love actually that I had half watched before work. Now it’s 1:00am here. I’ll start ut2004 up and see if the server is there after posting this.

The handcannon in Action Quake 2. Nothing more satisfying than sneaking up on a camping sniper bastard on a high ledge and blowing them all the fucking way across the map.

Not as recent as some of the titles mentioned…

The Golden Gun and the ZMG from Goldeneye.
The SuperDragon (with grenades!) and Farsight from Perfect Dark (I set up a scenerio with a whole bunch of MeatSims and all SuperDragons and Farsights. It’s so fun!).

Counter-Strike: Only on LAN, please. Then you can physically smack cheaters. I prefer SMGs, shotguns or machine guns. Snipers suck.

Oh, and the Firewall in Rise of the Triad was awesome. Aim slightly down, let it loose, and watch 'em burn. Whee!

I’ve always liked the opportunity to be to sneaky with sniper rifles, but the best one is in Timesplitters. It promoted greater accuracy in your shots as, unlike some games, only a head shot with it is an instant kill. Shoot anywhere else and it takes anything up to 5 shots to bring someone down. I also liked the fact that there was a manual zoom.

M1 Garand and Bren LM from call of duty. Accurate and powerful.

Don’t run; you’ll only die tired!

Double anything. Especially enforcers from UT.

I second the lightsabers and shrink guns previously mentioned.

My other favorite is the flamethrower in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Very satisfying to set your enemies on fire. It makes cool noises too, when in use and even just carrying it around.

I like a lot of the weapons in Half-Life, but I love the .357 Magnum. My favorite is to go for head shots. As the grunts say, “One shot - one kill.”

In HL Opposing Force I really like the sniper rifle. Simple, but with a great sound effect. The most fun scenario is killing the warrior aliens with one shot to the eye.

In UT, the old shock combo became one of my best friends. I generally played defense, so I needed a one shot kill to protect my flag, so it was the best option. Unleashing 6 rockets at somebody’s feet was a close second.

Haven’t tried UT2K4 yet. Guess I should check out the demo.

Jammer

I like the Chaingun from back in the old Team Fortress days, Heavy Weapons guy rules. I also liked that back then when you zoomed in with the sniper rifle it put a little red dot where you were aiming, so you’d come around a corner and see 4 or 5 little red dots and say, “uh uh, I need to find a better way…”

Also, the Desert Eagle from Soldier of Fortune. There’s just something satisfying about turning a guy’s head into a fine red spray that makes me warm and fuzzy inside. (Also the throwing knives…)
