Yep. Not sure if it’s really “pizza” but it’s tasty and cheap.
On the advice of Cook’s Illustrated, I tried the Pizzeria! pizza from DiGiorno and it is now my favorite.
We get the Jewel brand (Essentials Everyday I think it’s called - it used to be Chef’s Kitchen) Thin and Crispy Deluxe pizza. It really is excellent for those who doubt it - try one if you can when they’re on sale - you will become a believer. When it’s just for me, I go with a Totino’s Party Pizza. Sometimes you just have to have the very cheapest.
The only reason, and I mean the ONLY reason I miss Dominic’s is the $5 large deli pizza deal they had on Fridays.
Lately, pepperoni Tombstone has been my go-to. It is always seaoned (by me) with black pepper, onion powder, and red pepper flakes before it goes into the oven. About 8 or so minutes before I take it out of the oven, I add mozz.
Post oven I add Kraft Green Can parmesan. I may even add salt, I’m looney that way!
We decided to have frozen pizza for lunch. There’s a Digiorno three-meat pizza in the oven.
I did look at Tontino’s, but… SO.
Garlic powder and parm are never a bad idea, either before or after cooking (or both). I like red pepper flakes but not everyone does. Frozen pizzas can be skimpy with the toppings sometimes, and it’s a good use of small portions of leftovers, be it ham, ground beef, sausage, chicken, onions, peppers, etc.
I’d rather have a Jack’s or a Roma pepperoni than any of the Freschetta or DiGiornos. I think those are overpriced and try too hard, unsuccessfully, to try to be like delivery.
Also, thanks guys. It looks like my private shame, which the hubby has mocked relentlessly, is not a shame after all. The Totino’s Party Pizza, the best pizza $1 can buy, with its cube pepperoni and weird flaky yet stretchy crust, has been called out as beloved on the SDMB. I’m not saying it’s good, but once or twice a year it’s a must-do.
DiGiorno’s self rising crust, cheese only, but then grab three slices of ham (not deli) and spread 'em out before it goes in the oven.
My kids eat the Totino’s Party Pizzas, and then I eat them when they are done.
Was not impressed by the Digiorno pizza today. Even the SO said it tasted ‘plastic’.
I really like DiGiorno rising crust, served piping hot from the oven.
The only one I have really enjoyed (close to restaurant-quality taste) is: DiGiorno Crispy Flatbread Pizza w/ Pepperoni & Fire-Roasted Bell Peppers
Wait…is the Essentials Everyday the same as the Chef’s Kitchen in taste? Because if it is, my childhood is alive again.
As for my answer–Jewel’s Chef’s Kitchen Cheese and Sausage. Failing that, Reggio’s cheese and sausage.
Did you remember to unwrap it?
Have you noticed how much the Celeste has shrunk? One of those used to fill me up, now I need almost two of them. It’s not because I’m bigger, I am actually smaller now.
I used to love Ellio’s as a kid, but it’s just not the same.
7-Eleven also sells take-and-bake pizzas, which isn’t particularly notable, except that they also have some kind of magical high-tech pizza oven which can cook a pizza in two minutes. This is now my go-to source for immediate gratification pizza.
I also love the Totino’s Party Pizzas and almost always have one in the freezer.
The “self rising” frozens taste nasty to me. I don’t know if it’s the flavor of yeast or something else, but it’s not pleasant – a little like eating pizza toppings on a soft pretzel.
Other than that stipulation, frozen pizza is generally good, but almost always worse than delivery/pizzeria – although maybe the salty Home Run Inn frozen pie I tried was better than the strange pizza offered at Little Caeser’s.
Well, generally I prefer to freeze takeout pizza (in little plastic bags with a few slices in each) rather than get frozen pizza in the grocery store.
Just picked up a big rectangular pizza with bacon bits tonight from the local takeout place I rather like, “Super 2 4 1 Pizza and wings”
