Hard to beat Absolut Vodka from the freezer. But one can, on some occasions, appreciate a good Cognac, XO. I have tried only two XOs: Courvassier (sp?) and a (15-year-old-at-the-time) lesser known brand, both incredibly smooth.
Had some excellent tequilla, definatley one of the Dons, and boy does that go well with a light meal.
The Vodka is by far better for most occasions! Try it very cold, with a nice olive for a chaser, mmmmmm. (Is it too early to find a bar?)
Well, I’ve always liked Jack Daniels. Recently I heard a friend order a Jack and Ginger, and I thought, “Hmmm, Jack Daniels and Ginger Ale, how very interesting!” Now that has become my new favorite drink!! Yummy!
Absinthe is nice, if you can get it (and you probably can’t).
Therefore I have to fall back on my two favourites–Bombay Sapphire gin and Mount Gay Barbados rum. The former (best in its 47% abv export version) has part-filled many a G&T, and the latter was introduced to me this summer by a Barbadian cricketing clubmate. (If you can’t drink it while playing/watching cricket, it’s not a drink for me. :))
Jimmy, if dark rum is your poison, might I suggest some Lemon Hart Rum. Now technically, it’s not a dark rum, but more of an amber rum. It is simple amazing with Coke and a squeeze of lime. You’ll never go back. It has a great “vanilla-ey” flavour to it.
Gin happens to be my favourite. Bombay Sapphire for martinis and Tanqueray for G&T’s. BTW what is the plural for Gin and Tonic…Gin & Tonics, Gins & Tonics, Gins & Tonii?
As for Scotch, the only one that I have found that I like happens to be expensive as hell. Belvenie 15 Yr Old - liquid gold without the old sweat sock aftertaste.
I love you. I know I’m too young to be drinking but I love tequila, everyone warned me away from taking shots of the stuff, becase I’m a little personand a girl so I get drunk rather fast and because they thought I couldn’t take it. Who needs lime and salt? That stuff is good!
You really should try Junipero Gin, you’ll love it. Even better than Tanqueray 10. Also, Citrelle Gin from France is quite nice. At least I think that’s what it’s called. MAybe someone can refresh me.
I’m digging this. I’m going to try and sample everything here I’ve never heard of. I’m also going to try to find a way to convince someone else to pay for it. A dirty job, sure, but someone’s got to check up on these things.
With regards to dark rum, my favorite is Myers, with either Coke or 7up.
For gin, give me a Tanqueray and tonic.
As tradesilicon pointed out, Absolut kicks ass out of the freezer. I usually go with citron when indulging in that. The only problem I have with frozen vodka is I tend to drink too much too fast because it goes down so smoothly. Then all of a sudden…wham! It hits you all at once.
For scotch, it’s gotta be Johnny Walker red (ever since the liquor store dude clowned me for asking for Cutty Sark).
I don’t drink tequila much, but when I do I go for the ultra cheap brand Dos Dedos. I figure, if I’m going to drink something I don’t like,it might as well be cheap.
(this is my 600th post. No party, no frills, just conversation about booze, my favorite topic)
Ahhhh, let’s see, where to start. Oh, Black Bushmills. Always a favorite. For vodkas, I love the new vodkas that are coming out lately, Chopin and Belvedere both. One of them is 100% rye, the other is mixed grain. I tend to forget which is which, but I love them both. Tanqueray Sterling isn’t bad either. I’ve also got a fondness for Herradura, as others have mentioned. But if it’s going to go in a margarita I like the standard Sauza better than Cuervo. (And, to be a complete margarita heretic, while I despise margaritas made with a mix, I like the taste of Rose’s Lime Juice instead of fresh lime. I like the sweetness balancing out the sour. I’ll squeeze the limes that come as a garnish anyways. And to totally gross everyone out, drink it while eating chocolate chip cookies, homemade, of course.)
Put a bottle of those in front of me and I’m a happy camper.
As I’ve oft posted drunk, So-Co chased with orange flavored soda is heaven. The orange smooths the alky from the shot so all you taste is the flavor itself.
I have tried that vile liquid. It didn’t taste like rum at all…to me atleast.
I do enjoy the odd “Cuba Libra” as you describe above. It is rather tastey.
I like my rum & coke served short and neat. Ice is for babies. I don’t know what that means.
It is if you don’t like projectile vomiting. Now, I’ve had some really great pukes, just like anyone else, but it can occasionally cramp the lifestyle.
Homer: An orange soda chase is good with SoCo (actually I first tried it after you mentioned it in an earlier post) but for me it’s got to be good Orange soda, preferably Stewarts but Sunkist will do in a pinch. Definitely no store brand crap. Personally, though, my all-time favorite SoCo chaser is Dr. Pepper. The tastes are similar enough that they go together smoothly. They make a pretty good mixed drink, too.
Another SoCo man here. I discovered it as a teenager, and it’s been the only strong liquor that I actually like ever since.
I don’t mind bourbon so much… I’ve only ever had the grocery store stuff (Jim Beam) - nothing fancy. Johnny Walker Black is OK, too…
But if I have a any choice at all, it’s got to be “The Grand Old Drink of The South Originated on the Banks of the Mississippi in New Orleans Louisiana, USA”
Nonsense. Why I’ve made a name for myself among some people at my college for my ability to do things such as a thirty second keg stand after having already drunk until puking, and then puking again, and going back to drinking. I should note though, that it’s generally beer that does that to me, thus causing my fondness for incredibly strong drinks. But the fact that I can’t hold beer in my stomache has generally enhanced my life, with the occasional embarassing story.
I don’t know about as a chaser, but Dr. Pepper is my favorite SoCo mixer. All that Dr. Pepper is good for IMHO. I discovered it only because a vending machine gave me Dr. Pepper rather than Mountain Dew, and I needed a mixer quickly. It tastes good even at about half and half.
oldscratch, if you weren’t such a damn commie bastard, we’d make excellent friends ;). Just started on the bottle of Ten, so it’ll be a little while before I check either of those suggestions.
Well everyone has theri little problems. I’m sure I could look past our political differences long enough to share a few drinks with you. Ten is also very good ice cold, up, with a splash or two of bitters. mmmmmm.
