I heard some talk on a local sports radio station today that Favre had told the Packers a while ago that he would definitely come back if the signed Terrell Owens (too late now, Owens has signed with the Cowboys). I can’t find anything about this on a Google News search. Can anyone confirm if this was true and how would Cheese fans have reacted to signing TO?
If you think Ted won’t trade down, you’re being ignorant. He cares dick about the high draft choice, he wants more picks overall.
Huh?, I thought that was Ron Wolf that did that…
Their defense got worse as the year dragged on, players quit, the run stop was not there anymore.
He ain’t coming back, and lots of fans would prefer it that way. Let’s get this rebuilding thing underway. If your a real GB fan you’ll put the team ahead of Favre, not the other way around. Their only chance to return to glory in the next ten years to to let Favre go - Now.
We love what he did, not what he’s doing. He’s holding the team hostage, they don’t know if they should sign key free agents to help him or if they should sign young talent (through) the draft and develope a winning team. He’s hanstringing the organisation and the fans are fed up with it. I hear it everyday. Ted Thompson prefers to get talent through the draft anyway. I think the Pack and Favre are playing tug- of- war with each other and the Pack will win in the end. Favre hints that he’ll come back if they sign some key people and so far Thompson has not shown that he will do that.
Again with putting the player ahead of the team.
He’s a great player, but his bad side has been exposed. He’s an egotistical maniac. He’s souring his legacy.
Sorry, buddy, won’t happen.
holy cow. Wanna get married?
Sure, haven’t turned down a proposal yet!
Favre is not holding the team hostage, that is just nonsense. The Packers would not have done anything differently. They clearly are not mortgaging their future to try and win one more time for Favre. It is simply whether he wants to come back or not. Not one person from the Packers has said they want a decision. This is a non-issue, the fact that he hasn’t made a decision yet. The media, critics, commentators all just want a decision because they want a decision.
And Favre had a terrible season last year…and he had an excellent season the year before, so he may or may not be washed up, but I am willing to give him another season, if he wants it. One more season is not going to kill the franchise or set them back by any stretch, IMO.
And y’know what really sticks in my craw? I read something on SI.com or somewhere that the Pack’s backfield is now getting its top three runners back: Green, Fisher and Henderson. I understand Green (and Henderson really is more of a fullback than RB), but how can you forget about Gado? Like the dude didn’t average four yards per friggin’ carry? He’s definitely not Ahman Green. He may, in actuality, not be as good as Tony Fisher. If they forget about him, they’re a bunch of bleepity idiots.
I’m a big ol’ cheesehead, and I love the Pack, but [del]Farve[/del] Favre should go. He’s always thrown a lot of interceptions, but he used to make more than enough long throws and huge plays to make up for it. In the last couple years, he keeps going for the big plays, but a lot more of them are ending up in interceptions. It’s not entirely Favre’s fault – he doesn’t have a great team backing him up like he used to –but from what I’ve seen, I think he’s lost a lot of his power and accuracy.
Fisher signed with St Louis. Henderson has been a fullback for about 10 years, and he’s still good, but how many more hits does he have left. Green, meh. They’ll probably pick a rb in the draft in the middle rounds.
An RB would be tempting in the 3rd round or later with a 4th or 5th pick. Gado isn’t the long-term future, but he’s shown that he’s at least a quality backup. If the Pack does go with an RB (and I say this assuming there won’t be any quality prospects in the mid-rounds) it will be much later after taking some OLs and DLs. With a WR or S thrown into the mix.
I love that Arrington is now meeting with the brass. Not a lot of hype based on last years numbers, but barring injury there isn’t a lot of downside. Match him with Barnett and you have some reason to look for a much improved defense. Of course, he’s only visited, but there’s hope.
Favre is not holding the team hostage. Give it a rest. Do you honestly think he hasn’t been talking with the Front Office all this time? Thompson knows damn well what Brett is looking for, and Brett knows damn well what Ted is planning. Just because ESPN doesn’t report it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. If there was any sign that the Packers were committed to rebuilding than making a push this year or next, Brett would have announced the retirement by now. And yes, despite the announcement (where he didn’t retire) he mentioned this would be his last year.
I’ll call bullshit on that. Should he come back this year and it proves the Pack are immediate contenders, I have no doubt he’d consider another year. How long did Elway and Marino play? 36 isn’t so old.
Finally, can we put the T.O. bullshit to rest? It doesn’t matter if Favre wanted him or not. There is no way in hell the fans would have accepted it. Thinking T.O. was considered must make some apoplectic over not going for Moss. Same thing, except Moss is more respected in Green Bay then T.O. T.O. is such a non-issue that anyone mentiong that as any reason for Favre not coming back knows absolutely nothing about Packer fans. Even the smart ones on the east coast.
I’ll agree with you on T.O. He was not meant for a small place like Green Bay. He needs a big city with lots of limey light and people to adore him.
Wait, the fans make the personnel decisions up there? No wonder they can’t stop the run.
The fans own the team.
Actually, I have a bigger stake. I own shares. I get to vote (by proxy almost entirely) in who runs the operations. Not only can I spout opinion, I can vote my opinion.
Overall it’s a fraction of the total vote, but it counts more than writing a letter the sport’s editor. And that’s good enough for me. Plus my wife and I get a free invite to the shareholder’s meeting every year held at Lambeau Field. The best non-cash related return I can think of for an investment.
Any outsider thoughts on Charles Woodson? I wouldn’t count him as less-than-stellar, and he’d be a benfit, but would he be worthy of the money he’s likely to garner?
Actually, he needs a big enough city to give the reporters something other than him to focus on. I realize Dallas is a relatively hard-core football city, but there are enough things happening to give the writers fodder to write about other than obsessing about T.O. In Green Bay, based on the (proud)insanity concerning the Packers, his dinner choices would make the front page every day.
And not for any other reason than everyone waiting for a meltdown. Yes, I realize everyone playing in Green Bay is a pro-NFL’er like any other city and there are egos there. But in Green Bay there is an expectation of the fans for a player to represent the franchise. And if you display something that warrants admiration, you’ll get it in GB. That’s why Favre, whatever the decision, will own the city, and most of the state. (I still say he’s coming back for at least one year, BTW).
Mike McKenzie? You couldn’t find a PETA member in GB that would offer to walk his dog. Walker? Favre nailed him last year. (Another reason I think he’s coming back.) Grady Jackson? Called the holdout bluff.
There is an apparent philosophy in GB that is unique in many ways and different from other clubs. Since 1919 they’ve been the underdog. Underfunded, held to the small-town disadvantage in recruiting. Hell [Don Hutson[/] became a legend in Green Bay and the NFL because the postmark was earlier than the contract he signed with the Dodger’s.
Fate loves Green Bay.
That part about GB living on a shoestring? [url=http://www.packers.com/history/birth_of_a_team_and_a_legend/]History of the tiny upstart.](http://www.packers.com/history/birth_of_a_team_and_a_legend/chapter_2/)
Sounds like the beginning of a franchise the fans stuck with in the good and bad years.
And Favre got us to one and close to another. I don’t put much stock in the 4-12 season. If you know football, you know damn well he was playing with, at best, an NFL Europe team. And not the World Cup winner at that. (Or whatever the hell they’re calling it this week.)
No 30 TD year? Who the hell did he have to throw the ball to?
All the INTs? It was a crapshoot with odds based on who was able to take the field.
Shouldn’t have thrown so many ducks? No runing game they spent a year practicing for. Gado is a hot prospect. But he was a 3rd string rookie out of a D-III school. If anyone thinks Favre could rest easy knowing the running game was enough to put the fear of DBs focus off him, you’re deluded.
Favre shouldered the entire team last year, and is solely responsible for the 4 wins. (Many losses were less than 6 points. These weren’t blowout wins folks.)
I’m still calling for at least one more year. And I’m still saying that even an 0-16 year he’d be elected governor. I’ve been wrong before, I just hope this isn’t one of them. Where’s the love, people?
