No, the intent should be (and I presume is) to carry out the investigation and possibly charges and trials without influencing the election in any way, or give the appearance of doing so. I don’t think they’re playing a game to influence the election. If they wanted to influence the election it’s a lot easier and more effective to just be more open and move faster.
FBI Search and Seizure at Trump's Mar-A-Lago Residence, August 8, 2022, Case Dismissed July 15, 2024
Fatigue? I mean, how much interest do you expect how many people/news outlets to have about this over how long a period?
This has pretty much slid down to the level where there is just a continuous drip of daily news articles which outrage folk on one side, and are viewed as nothing burgers by the other.
How come there hasn’t been much info on the 1/6 hrs lately? How many issues can the average person stay outraged about at one time?
As @Fiendish_Astronaut noted, it’s only one paper that is reporting it, without any attributable source. Now, that paper is the Washington Post, which is pretty good with its sources, but still, other journalists have to be careful about just being the echo chamber.
My understanding is he was already planning on announcing for 2024 immediately after this election. The only reason he hasn’t already is the GOP has told him if he announces too early, they’ll stop paying the legal fees for the other messes he’s been involved in.
I really doubt the majority of MAGA’s have any interest in the 2022 election (it’s a lot of thinking, and besides, it’s getting harder to vote in many states). They just want to vote for Dear Leader. The silly little elections mean nothing to many of them.
So, thinking people must help to enforce the House and Senate for Dems, so congress does not fall back into minority rule.
Put TFG in prison where he should have been 30 years ago. Let them spend their energy bitching about that.
That should be done. Period. We are a country ruled by laws. We need to enforce them. Full Stop.
Then we can start trying to clean up Trumps mess. But only then.
Washington and Lincoln would agree.
Agree! I’ve been saying he should be arrested since Day 1. They should be searching his other properties and he should be in a holding cell until they’re done. US justice system looks very weak at the moment.
The damage to our intelligence network could be permanent. He may have already ruined certain channels already.
Setting aside little technicalities like the 4th, 5th, and 8th Amendments, of course.
No one said that.
You said he should be in a holding cell until they finished searching. On what basis should that happen? Are you aware of probable cause for his other properties? On what basis should he be detained pending searches? He has the right to liberty and the right to reasonable bail. He can’t just be detained in jail pending searches.
Seriously? Are you aware of the stolen documents that were already seized from one of his properties? By being free, isn’t he incentivized to go to the other properties and clean up a bit? Does he have enough cash and connections to flee?
Then he needs to be charged with an indictment. That is completely separate from the suggestion of detention pending searches.
Sure.
But due to missing documents from the US Governments Classified and Top Secret Files. Trumps other living quarters should be put on immediate lockdown. No one in, no one out.
If I was discovered with Top Secret documents, AND SOME seemed to be missing, and owned a few different properties, what would happen?
The fact that he is a former President that traveled all over the place visiting leaders of countries makes this even more critical.
Seriously, look at Michael Cohen, one of Trumps ‘Fixers’. He probably has a few near every one of his properties.
And the US government’s authority to do that is?
4th Amendment protects his papers and property; 5th Amendment protects his liberty and the liberty of his associates.
On what basis does the state get to lock down properties A and B, because evidence of a crime was found in property C, several states away>
I didn’t say to do it like Putin would. I assumed that it would be done within the appropriate manner. After all, it has been done to others in exactly that way. Just not former presidents.
The basis is that documents are missing out of top secret files and not all found in in property C. But the person of interest has other properties that the documents may be in.
Now that we know documents are missing, and have a good reason to believe the perpetrator had them at some point at property A. Should we not search property B and C?
An indictment isn’t instead of; it’s how. There exists enough evidence now to indict and arrest anyone else who did these things, so that’s what should happen to Trump, too. And given that the crime is mishandling of secrets, he needs to be indicted and arrested quickly, before he can do any more harm.
Only if you have probable cause for believing that there is evidence of a crime that will be found at locations B and C. Evidence of a crime being found at A may help with an argument for B and C, but by itself is not sufficient.
That’s different than what I was responding to:
All that statement said was that he should be detained in a holding cell pending searches. No mention of an indictment, no mention of bail; just a statement that the state can detain someone in jail pending a search of their property.
Ok. Right. We are a nation of laws. Not men.
But I will say, we are screwed when a president has been and feels that he is above the law. The law needs to prove him wrong.
That would be unnecessary, considering all the information that we all already know. Of course you need a warrant to search his properties. Everyone knows this. They just did that in MAL. Of course you need evidence that a major crime was committed to arrest him. Plenty of that. Of course you need to show that he might be motivated to flee. These are all obvious to everyone.
