Yep. Especially Defendant Nauta. He let the FBI interview him, testified to the grand jury…then stopped cooperating. Based on the timing in the released discovery, it’s possible his testimony (Jun 21st) helped secure a subpoena of the surveillance cameras footage (Jun 24th). Yikes. I’m interested to see how long they stay buddies.
At this point I’m wondering if it’s even possible for Nauta to escape from Trump.

Trump, understandably, seems pretty nervous. “THIS CONTINUING SAGA IS RETRIBUTION AGAINST ME FOR WINNING AND, EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY TO THEM, ELECTION INTERFERENCE REGARDING THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION,” he added on Thursday morning. “IT WILL BE THERE UPDATED FORM OF RIGGING OUR MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION. LOOK AT THE POLLS – THEY CAN’T BEAT ME (MAGA!) AT THE BALLOT BOX, THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN WIN IS TO CHEAT. STOP THEM NOW!”
That article says the first batch of evidence against him has been given to him - is it usual procedure to turn over evidence against someone TO that person? That seems odd to me, and doesn’t that mean he’ll also know who’s going to testify against him? If so, doesn’t that endanger witnesses? Or does this sort of thing happen all the time?
I’m sure the evidence was turned over to his lawyers, not to him personally. Nevertheless, per the article [emphasis mine]:
The evidence also includes grand jury witness testimony — which means Trump now knows who testified against them and what they said — as well as material obtained through subpoenas.
I believe that each side is required to show the other side what evidence they have.
Okay, that makes sense. I expect this will start going downhill quickly in Trump’s case, however. If his lawyers are stupid enough to tell him anything, then he’ll blab it all over the place.
But wasn’t he directed not to do that?

I’m struck by how fixated he is on “Boxes” “Boxes” “Boxes”.
Par for the course. He tries to dilute all wrongdoing he’s been accused of to innocuous words. Accused of trying to blackmail Ukraine into making up accusations about Biden in exchange for already-authorized international aid? “They’re trying to convict me over a phone call!” Accused of colluding with Russia to subvert the 2016 election? “Russia, Russia, Russia.” Accused of trying to browbeat Georgia into committing election fraud? “Another perfect phone call.” And now accused of espionage and obstruction of justice? “Boxes.”
Perhaps someone should re-write that song:

Every time I hear about this, I think about one of my uncles who was a bit of a hoarder. He kept lots of empty boxes because he figured he’d maybe use them someday. I recall one of my cousins telling me about how they asked one time if they could get rid of at least some of the boxes, and he reacted just like this. “No, you can’t get rid of them. They’re my boxes.”
Of course, my uncle never had access to nuclear secrets…
Well, true dat, plus simple words is the level he operates on anyway.
Why should it seem strange? A defendant in a criminal trial is entitled to know the case against him, so he can prepare a defense. They always see the evidence before trial.
I understand a defendant is largely entitled to keep his defense secret until trial.

In her column for the Washington Post, Rubin suggested that the former president likely thought by announcing he was making another run for the Oval Office would keep the DOJ from indicting him out of fears it would look like a political hit job…
Now the former president is reportedly under the belief that he can “self-pardon” but, as Rubin points out, that is a non-starter according to legal experts.

Only repeating what I’ve heard real lawyers say, but though they have to turn over discovery before trial, they don’t often turn over everything so early. They even provided notes pointing out areas of interest in the surveillance tapes instead of just dumping days or weeks of raw footage on the defense to work with however they wanted. And apparently grand jury witness testimony doesn’t have to be turned over until AFTER witnesses have testified at trial. They only have to say who is going to testify. That part struck me as strange, but that’s what was said. But they sent almost everything (not the classified stuff) over with a bow on top (figuratively speaking, of course).
My guess, they’re trying to impress upon trump and Nauta that they have the good. Scared the main defendant mightily, based on some of his social media posts today.
