A cattle herder is a very changed man after several days in the woods.
I really wanted to like this series. I love horror and I love anthology series, and both have been absent from primetime network tv for a while. I’ll DVR it as long as they’re airing it, but I’m very disappointed.
I think this episode illustrates my biggest frustration with the series. Modern tv writers apparently don’t know how to tell a complete story in an hour. The family dynamic was handled very clumsily, and I can think of a number of ways that would have worked better. The concept of the story was good–I just found it poorly executed.
Poor execution has been consistent throughout the episodes. That’s weird to me, because I know the actors, directors, and writers are different for each episode.
Vivalostwages, I know you’ve usually started threads on the show. We may be the only two regular watchers on the board. I don’t personally know anyone else who watches, so for all I know, we’re the only regular viewers in the world. What are your thoughts on the show generally?
Another regular watcher here. Although at this point it’s really only because nothing much else is on. None of the stories thus far have been really compelling, or, quite frankly, all that scary (although I thought the changing wall paintings in the Eric Roberts episode were genuinely creepy). I guess I keep watching hoping that eventually one that’s really good will air. (Beavis and Butthead: “Those last 10 videos sucked – maybe the next one will be cool.”)
Last night’s was just kind of mediocre. I agree that the family dynamic felt forced and cliched, and the ending seemed fairly routine. Most of these seem to fall apart at the end, with the exception of the body-switching one, which I admired for having the guts to push things as dark as they did, and the New Year’s Day one, which had a twist that actually caught me off guard (perhaps because I wasn’t expecting much).
And then there was the wedding one, in which the twist took me off guard only because there was NO evidence for it to be had all along in the buildup, and upon reflection, none of the actions and reactions of either of the two characters made any sense given the final reveal. That one just annoyed me.
Maybe the next one will be cool.
I watch whenever I remember to do so, each time hoping for a good one. To date, I’ve only liked the “Family Man” episode. The rest are meh. I’ll tune in again next week, if I remember.
He touched P-p-pete’s p-p-p-piece!
I thought that it was a very creepy episode- but then it just… ended. I actually looked at the clock to make sure the episode was really over.
Eh. I watch, but given I know it was created by the same person who created Masters of Horror, I didn’t go into this expecting much. 2/3rds of MOH episodes were duds too. It’s summer, what else are we going to watch?
Yeah, it did “just end” but there was also
some doubt at the end. Was the mother infected / changed? Her last words were something like “get your hands off MY kids”. This could be read as “hands off my food”. They left this in doubt. At least, that was my take on it.
J.
I wondered about the ending as well.
missouri, I like the way they’re filmed for the most part, but the writing is lacking and the acting is not much better. Too bad.
I still watch it, though, because there’s not a whole lot else on, and I don’t have cable.
I missed out on Masters of Horror, so I had no idea what to expect from this. I guess I should just be happy that there’s a non-sitcom primetime show that isn’t a soap opera or about cops or lawyers. I really want anthologies to come back, and I hoped this show would help.
I do find the show pretty entertaining. I like that the episodes tend to end on a dark note. Doug Jones was good and creepy in this episode. It accomplishes what it sets out to do.
I wonder if they’ll finish out the rest of the season with the Olypics coming up.
