The snow is so thick you can barely see across the street from where I am here in northern NJ. There’s a big giant lump of snow in my front yard and I have no idea what’s underneath it. It might be the neighbor’s car. I just went outside for about ten seconds on my front porch and came back inside nearly covered in sideways blowing snow. Meanwhile the mayor of NYC has kept the schools open. Because he’s fucking crazy.
Everybody knows that!
Damn, be safe northern peoples.
I’m kind of with MacTech – it’s just been a more-or-less normal New England winter here. It’s certainly been cold this winter but not really record-breaking cold. I don’t think it’s even dropped below zero here. And we really haven’t been getting the continuous back-to-back snowstorms that are the hallmark of a really trying winter. Most of the storms have been followed by thaws, so there’s been plenty of place to put snow. And while I guess there’s still time for a few significant blizzards, the NOAA is hinting at a pattern change with warmer weather.
I live in Maryland and I got a foot of snow Wed night - Thursday morning. I shoveled my walk and around my car as much as I could Thursday afternoon, then it snowed a couple of inches in the evening. It should warm up to nearly 40 today and maybe snow a bit again tonight. I’m ready for this winter to be over. It’s supposed to be in the 40s and 50s and possibly the 60s next week.
And what was with North Carolina (or was it South?)? They had a terrific mess with their part of the storm, but you think they would have learned from Atlanta to stay off the dang roads.
I’m snowed in until the plow gets around to my street. We got 13 inches in the first wave, and about 4 more in the evening. About to suit up for shoveling round 2, just in case the plow does come early enough for my husband and I to get to work today. I really don’t have extra vacation hours to use, and I can’t work from home, so I hope I’m not stuck here all day.
I heard a lot of branches creaking and cracking and hitting the ground last night. We lost a few low branches off the big pines, and my neighbor lost a huge branch off his backyard maple. It’s unbelievable that none of the downed branches took out a power line!
My beef with these silly storm names is that it is a toe in the door for the insurance companies.
When Sandy came through I looked into a roofing claim for our church. I was surprised to find that it is quite common for insurance policies to say something like “for any named storm your deductible is 20% of the value of the building”
See what a difference a name can make?
AFAIK, insurance companies currently pay no attention to Weather Channel names, but some day they might alter their policies in a subtle way.
I got about 10 inches of snow in the Philly area yesterday. I dug my car out in the late afternoon. In the evening, I saw a bright flash of light, and wondered wtf? Then the rumble of thunder. Snow, thunderstorm, followed by some freezing rain, and a few more inches of snow overnight. I’m not liking this weather at all. But I’m working from home for about the 15th time this year.
I see outside that the shortsighted folks have done the absolute bare minimum of digging to get their cars free. yeah, that won’t be an issue later on when those drifts turn to ice and half the streets can’t be used due to them being snow emergency routes.
Selfish dickbags. Buy and use a fucking shovel!
I have to concur. Certainly other parts of the country are getting the winter from hell, but this is at best a slightly-above-average New England winter. I’ve only had the snowblower out 4 or 5 times this season - in past bad winters I’ve had it out 4 times in a single week.
We have drifts ranging from two to six feet at home, average snow depth now is around a foot or so…
This winter is closer to the winters of my childhood here, growing up in the late '70s and '80s, we had light snow every few days, and typically two-ish storms (9-12 inches) per month, with at least one to three MAJOR blizzards per season…
…not counting the inevitable End-Of-Season DUMPING we would get once people thought the season was over…
This “storm” barely qualified, much ado about nothing here, this is an ALMOST normal winter this year
