Final Supper For Johnny L.A.

Of course you will!!!

Kathy

Or I could land a really good job and buy myself a Cessna to fly myself down in!

Just so long as it’s a 337A, Johnny.

You could get your ILT rating.

And then you could teach me - where my previous instructor left off.

I enjoyed that plane!

Ooh! 337s are cool.

Hey, about this party… What do I have? The fish, or the sausages? Aiyiyi, this leaving California is harder than I thought!

Johnny, I don’t think they have bangers and mash within a 50 mile radius of Bellingham.

However, the fish and chips at the double decker bus in Old Fairhaven are incredible!

I’d stick with the sausages, if I were you.

Sadly, JustPlainBryan and I won’t be able to make it, as we’re booked that weekend.

I hope you have a safe move up to Washington, Johnny

**
But they do within 70…

Where in WA are you moving Jonny?

BurnMeUp: Birch Bay, a short block from the shore.

Dude, I think it’s great you’re moving to Washington and that you’re escaping Hell-A, but don’t you think you should have chosen somewhere like near a job

I mean it’s a hippie paradise and all and very beautiful, but what are you going to do for a living? Shuck clams?

Yeah, the job situation isn’t great. I was looking for a house in Whatcom County. I really like it up there. Seattle is a bit crowded for my tastes. Having lived in So. Cal. all my life (except for a year and a half in Japan when I was little), and having lived in Los Hideous since 1987, I’m sick of large cities. I thought of looking for housing between Lynnwood and Everett, but it was too expensive.
What I wanted was to find a house in the $60,000 to $80,000 range so that I could pay cash if it became absolutely necessary. Unfortunately housing prices have increased considerably I couldn’t find anything that was in decent shape for under $100,000 – and even those were just “decent”.

My best fiend bought a house in Birch Bay two years ago for $60,000. I had been looking in the Bellingham area, and there was just nothing there for $100K or less except for mobile homes. When he decided to sell, his house was appraised at $96,000. It has a new roof, repaired foundation, new electical, and new plumbing. And it was just in my price range. No, I couldn’t pay cash for it, but I could put 20% down and have enough in the bank to make payments for a while in the event I lost my job. And the mortgage on this three-bedroom house is considerably less than than the rent on my one-bedroom apartment.

But what about a job? I’ll find something. I could live on half of what I was making here. I can even survive on my unemployment benefits. Something will turn up. There is an extremely remote possibility that in a year’s time my former department director (who was laid off in September and is now a director in another company) might have a position that would allow me to telecommute from my home. If that happens, it will be sweet! Very little hope of it coming to be, but it’s a possibility.

My friend is a filmmaker, and he has a project in the works. He might get enough development money to hire me during the preproduction/research/writing stage. He wants to hire me as DP (Director of Photography), so I can get a little income there when we start shooting. We’ve also talked about another project, and I’ve written a business plan. He’s talking to a financial person to see if we can start it.

And then there’s commuting. I used to commute 75 miles each way to work, and my recent job was 43 miles away from home. I don’t like it, but it can be done. From Birch Bay, my limit would be Everett.

I could also get an apartment close to Seattle or where ever, and go to the house on weekends. I’ve applied for positions in Everett, Seattle, and Federal Way or Chehalis. If I get one of the positions, then I can rent a small place and still make house payments.

So to summarize: I’ll look for work in Bellingham first, but also look for work in the Seattle area. If I find work within 80 miles, I can commute for a while. If I find work farther away, then I can rent a studio apartment.

Johnny Isn’t Birch Bay on Chuckanut Drive? I think part of Chuckanut Dr. fell down yesterday. Don’t worry, it happens all the time. DOT has gotten good at putting back roads that lose their way.

The college might be hiring.
Don’t forget the other direction too. Maybe Canada is hiring.
You wouldn’t make as much in Canada, after all, they pay you in play money. The daily border crossing has been simplified. They have a process similar to getting a Passport or Visa. It takes about to months. Intensive background check. The pass is good for a lifetime, for $50.00 It makes crossing a drive through.

Check your email, hon. My boss is Executive Producing (and I’ll possibly get to “associate produce”) a documentary for PBS. There could be some work there for you, so I need your resume!

Lemme double check the calendar, but I’d love to be there.

Thanks, Shayna! Check your e-mail.

JavaMaven1, JustPlainBrian, Rick, Celtic Cowboy: Sorry to miss you! :frowning:

Oh, wait… CelticCowboy might make it!

If I can make it I will come. Save some shepherd’s pie for me.

I just thought of this last night, in regards to what you should order.

If the sausages don’t get served with fries, I demand you order the fish and chips.

We need a pirate ship made o’ fries!!!

Yeah Bellingham to Seattle can be upwards of a 4 hour drive, so i’d try not looking there for work were I you.

It’s a beautiful area… and somewhat affordable, but it’s just so far away.

Oh the road didn’t fall down… it was buried in rocks from the landslide… it ought to be clean in a few weeks

Damn right!
