So out of the 10 finalists there are 5 in each category actually nominated, right?
My thoughts:
Interesting that Studio 60 did not make the cut. There was so much promise (and hype) for that show. Wonder if any performances will make it in??
The Sopranos will win Best Drama, there is no question in my mind and I have never seen an episode of the show. The Emmys are just too predictable that way.
Never heard of the shows Extras or Dexter…??
No The King of Queens? In my book, the most consistently funny show on TV.
House as a series has worn itself out, however Hugh Laurie continues to impress in the lead role.
Extras was on HBO – a comedy with Ricky Gervaise playing an extra, an actor. I only watched one episode (the one with Ian McKellan), but it was a hoot.
Dexter is on Showtime. It’s based on the books by Jeff Lindsay. Dexter is played by Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under, etc.) He’s a sociopath, a killer. His redeeming quality is that he only kills other killers. It’s worth a rental.
I can’t believe Deadwood didn’t get an Emmy nomination. If Ian McShane doesn’t at least get one for Best Dramatic Actor, then there is no justice and the whole thing is a sham
I was originally thinking that Heroes, being such a huge breakout hit, has a chance to win, but then I read that they submitted the pilot episode to the academy? WTF? That’s one of the weakest episodes! Why didn’t they submit “Five Years Gone” or “Company Man?”
New shows usually have their pilot submitted because most Emmy voters are too busy working in TV to WATCH it. So you need to make the emmy voters familiar with the show by giving them the pilot and submitting OTHER episodes for other categories and hope it all bleeds together.
It’s a crime. Easily the two best dramas this last year. Frankly Rome and The Sopranos round out my top four, so good for HBO. But they did not achieve the heights of the other two shows.
Yeah and I tend to dislike/be really bored with police procedurals. I avoided it for just that reason until this last year. The fact that it has leaped into #1 on my list says a lot about its quality ( to me ).
I’m sure there are more people watching, since it keeps getting renewed.
Why it doesn’t even get a nod in the nomination… My totally WAG is that the show simply is too uncomfortable. Dexter killing people and wrapping single serving cuts in Saran wrap is so out there, that even if it’s squicky, it’s just a weird fantasy.
What The Wire depicts is the urban decay that most people carefully choose not to see. That nightmare is then not countered by the Supercops of BAU, the Jeffersonian, NCIS or CSI. There are no heroes, not even anti-heroes. In fact, the cops are inepts, understaffed, underfunded and sent out to do the wrong things, while their bosses just care about statistics and lining their pockets.
It’s a terrible picture they’re painting and I guess that’s why they get snubbed.
Here’s an old article from Salon that talks about Emmy snubs of shows like The Wire. In short, the writer thinks The Wire doesn’t have the visibility needed to be nominated.
All my friends watch it. My brother turned me onto it with VHS tapes when it first started, so my family watches it too. We’re all big HBO-heads. I didn’t realize it wasn’t very popular, considering it got renewed when Deadwood and Rome both got canceled. It’s the best currently running show on TV, hands down. You’d think, now that it’s in syndication, more people would be watching it.
There’s also the “what episode did they submit” question. (Desperate Housewives, for example, is known for submitting episodes that don’t show their strength to the committees, so it doesn’t do as well as it could.)
And the “when did it air” question, (which I know has hurt HBO and Showtime in the past when their non-traditional seasons missed the Emmy window) which I’m too lazy to look up right now.
Dramas: Rome is a surprise. I’m betting Dexter, Friday Night Lights, or The Sopranos.
Comedies: Earl & Housewives had weak seasons. And I just don’t like Weeds. I want to, but don’t.
I’m hoping for Ugly Betty. I’m guessing Entourage.
