Fireworks? What the?

Someone’s setting off fireworks not far from here. It sounds like they’re a couple of blocks away. All kinds - bottle rockets, screamers, aerials by the sound of it (though I can’t see them from here). What the hell? It’s April 16, not the Fourth of July! What, are you celebrating getting your taxes mailed in on time?

I wouldn’t mind as much if it wasn’t scaring the crap out of my dog. Poor thing shakes every time they go off. Usually we don’t have to worry about that till the end of June.

Where are you located? I’ve been hearing quite a few the past few days here in Madison as well. I was actually wondering (since we have a relatively large Hispanic population in the area) if it was early Cinco De Mayo celebrations.
Or maybe everyone’s celebrating my 1000th post. Hoo-ray me!

Suburban Detroit area. As far as I’m aware of, this little burgh doesn’t have a significant Hispanic population. 'Tis a little bit early for Cinco de Mayo anyway, isn’t it?

I figure it’s the same bozos who are the ones getting the jump on the fourth of July at the end of June. For the last couple of years there has been someone setting them off almost every weekend until August. I may have to hunt them down this year and ask them what the hell they’re doing.

I have NEVER heard them in April though. Fortunately, tonight they stopped not long after I posted.

Weird - last night I heard some, too. I was just as confused as you are… I kept wondering if there was a holiday I didn’t know about (there are still a few I overlook or miss completely, being a Canadian in the US), then just shrugged it off and though maybe some kid had brought home a really, really good report card. Or a milestone birthday. Still a little strange… but now it seems stranger. As my location will tell you, I’m nowhere near either of you…

Bwuuhh?

Hmm. Maybe people ARE celebrating finishing their tax returns, 'cause I don’t know of any other holiday this weekend.

Probably accountants or tax preparers. I’m serious. April 15th and 16th are huge events for those folks. They get no rest at all from New Year Day until April 15th (in some cases, midnight on the 15th.)

It’s “Fifth of November” silly!

(;))

There was a huge fireworks show over the river the evening of April 14th here. I still can’t figure out what from. It was past the close of the French Quarter Festival but too early to start celebrating Jazz Fest. Of course, this being New Orleans, it could just have been “because.” Which is often the only reason for a party down here.
