First Hurricane of the Season?

SPECIAL TROPICAL DISTURBANCE STATEMENT- 950 AM EDT TUE MAY 8 2007

This seems a tad early, and non-tropical. Ah well, it’s probably nothin.

Chalk it up to global warming. I think we’re suppost to have a pretty crazy hurricane season this year. :smack:

Different type of storm. According to our weather dudes, it has a cold core rather than the warm core a hurricane would have. Also, a sub-tropical storm has much tighter, and therefore stronger, winds closer to the core. Sure looks like a good whirlygig though, don’t it?

Apropos to this, and in keeping with my general interest in preparedness:

How many of you have a weather radio with a feature that will trigger an audible alarm when there is a weather emergency in your area?

I hope this storm comes ashore and heads down here into Florida, so that it can help put out the fires and quell some of the drought problems we’re facing.

I don’t think the season officially starts until June. So if it’s out of season, is it just a storm?

We were supposed to have a crazy one last year, also, and IIRC it was one of the mildest hurricane seasons in a while.

I was going to mention this. Don’t put too much faith the weather predictions.

It’s not really out of season. Summer weather patterns have already begun in the subtropics and tropics. The Hurricane Season is a pretty elastic entity.

First named of the season: Tropical Storm Andrea.

Great! Just what we need. Some more wind to fan the fires.

The National Hurricane Center is calling it a “Subtropical Storm Andrea”

I’m using a little app for my Mac called “OSX Planet”, it’s a virtual Earth that shows current weather, volcanic activity, earthquakes, storms and the like, i’ve got it in rectangular “map” mode, updating every 10 minutes or so

it was interesting watching Andrea form off the coast, however there are a couple storm systems i also have my eyes on, a crescent shaped storm right behind Andrea, and a rather large, disorganized storm system between South America and Africa…

Damn. My coworkers and I were just talking yesterday about having a whole three weeks before Hurricane Season 2007 officially kicked off. Looks like the season started early.

My prediction: each of the next 50 or so seasons will be predicted to have lots of tropical storm activity. Some of these indeed will.
