FloriDopers: Heads up for TS Fay

Here in Largo/Belleair, it’s been bright and sunny all day…nary a drop of rain. Quite breezy though.
Guess I’ll have to wash my car after all.

Here in southeast broward we got what was basically a windy versions of the usual afternoon showers, repeated every hour or two, for the last 36h. there was, however, a surprising lack of lightning and thunder… go figure

We’re about 15 mins from beach here. I think the eye is going over us now, or at least coming close. It’s been steady wind and rain here and it’s like being in a carwash. There’s been several really strong gusts, but nothing we haven’t seen before. We’ve had a little bit of water come in through the front door, so we put some towels down. Our drainage ditch in the back is filling up, but we’re higher than the neighbors behind us, so it’s probably leaking under their fence.

Hubby had the day off from work, but we didn’t know this until he was almost there. I happened to check the email reminder he sent me to check out the company’s website for updates…/slap.

It wasn’t too bad around here. I drove through one bad squall this morning on my way to work, but as a whole it wasn’t much worse than a bad thunderstorm. Of course I’m not one of the 16,000 Palm Beach County residents currently without power, either. I’m sure they have a different opinion of Fay.

My biggest disappointment was that I had to go into work today. There were relatively few cars on the road, so I’m guessing a lot of businesses shut down for the day. A quick poll of my coworkers showed that we all called the emergency number several times just in case management forgot to post a message that we were closed. I felt like I was 8 years old, waiting to hear the school closings announced on a snowy morning, only to find out that my school was the only one open!

I hope the FloriDopers near Jacksonville are keeping an eye on Fay. The last time I checked, the NOAA was predicting that it’s going to make a U-turn and make landfall as a hurricane.

As a noob, I am slightly freaked out.
I am on Amelia Island, north of Jax, and they close the bridge if the wind is over 45 mph.
We will be staying put.
Will be making lots of preparations tomorrow.

I’m in Fort Lauderdale, and except for some solid rain in the morning, and swaying palm trees throughout the day, we didn’t get much in the way of excitement. Frankly, I was a little disappointed, especially since my office didn’t close today. Phooey.

What the hell… I’m looking at the projections and now it’s going to make a sharp left right over me (and ivy and others too!)

It’s nothing right now, though…

Watch out NE Florida, 9pm track shows it intensifying into a hurricane and striking the coast:

Looks like we still have a chance at some wind here in Gainesville. I’m going to try and get our Disaster Call List finished at work today and cross my fingers for a day off.

Anyway, it’s a lovely gray day here. I like the rain.

Fortunately that’s changed now, sorry if I worried anybody.

What a fizzle. I’ve had more wind and rain from an afternoon thunderstorm.

Everyone in Jacksonville…hang on!

This storm was nothing but good for us down in Lee County, where it dropped a lot of gentle to moderate rain and only shook out the dead, weak tree limbs. All our Tropical Storms should be like this.

It was all good here. The nice cool temps meant I could open the house up and get some fresh air in. The wind was never from a direction that would blow rain into the house.

We lost a tree branch in the backyard and that was about it. Plus I got a half day in the office yesterday and today.

I heart tropical storms! Even if they ruin my birthday.

I awoke about 5:00 am this morning (well, I was already awake thanks to the dogs) to pounding wind and rain. It lasted about two hours and dropped 1 1/2" of rain. It’s been grey and windy since. We have a new pond in our backyard and the actual pond is threatening to overtop its banks. The ICWW was pretty high this afternoon with all of the rain and a full moon. They are predicting five to seven inches of rain.

BUT. It looks like Fay will pay a visit to Flagler County and points west. Let’s hope she just disintegrates first…

NOW we’re getting the rain. A thunderstorm, I haven’t noticed any gusty winds yet. I guess Melbourne and the rest of the Space Coast is really getting slammed…guys, check in when you can.

I’m getting a little irritable now. Not a drop of rain have we seen yet, but my relatives who live in Palatka on the banks of the St. John’s River are liable to have serious problems soon if this damn storm doesn’t move on. The kids don’t have school today. I still have to work though. What happens next is everyone will get sent home but me, because I’m deemed essential at these times to answer the phone.

Also, it seems unavoidable that we’ll be hosting friends from out of town tonight, the house is a shambles, and the spouse is grumpy about “having to clean around the kids.”

If anyone sees Fay, could you give her a swift kick in the ass? Thank you.

It’s way worse today in my area (Oviedo towards downtown) than the last two days. I’m starting to think this stupid storm is going to become a landscape feature.

“Come visit the Space Coast- see World’s Oldest Storm!”

is anyone actually getting thunder and lightning from fay?

we have been getting windy rainy bursts here since late sunday but no thunder or lightning at all. it strikes me as odd since the typical afternoon storms we usually get always have a lot of lightning… heck, friday afternoon we had one for about an hour that sounded like someone had installed 5 busy bowling lanes on our roof… but nary a peep from fay.

Nary a bolt so far.

Which is weird, because we had thunder and lightning almost every day for a month before Fay.
