Food combos that seem gross but aren't

“Fig Newtons and scotch. They’re great if you dunk 'em.” – Col. Harry Potter

Damned if the man wasn’t right.

Popcorn, butter, salt and black pepper. People look at me funny over the black pepper, but everyone I’ve talked into trying it admits that it’s good.

Try the strawberries with a splash of balsamic vinegar. That is good, too.

Nope - I think we got it from my father’s English roots.

My daughter makes cheese, jelly and mustard sandwiches. She definitely takes after me when it comes to mixing sweet and savory. She also gets slushies after school sometimes and will dip chips into them.

You know, I’m pretty sure this qualifies as thread-shitting. It’s one thing to come in and say, “Huh, that* does* sound gross…Here are my things that sound gross but are really good.” All you’ve done is repeat that others’ choices are disgusting and have added nothing to the discussion beyond your disdain.

About 20 years ago at about 3 or 4 in the morning and I was walking…err…stumbling home, I stopped in this pizza place to grab a slice. I slurred my order, so the guy says “You want fries with that?” I nodded yes, “Gravy?” I nodded again. So that’s what I got, A big slice of combination pizza with fries and gravy piled on top and it was actually pretty good!

I’m guilty of dirtying up the thread, too, in response to those sanctimonious and uninformed posts. Sorry about that. I wish I could delete my earlier contribution. There is a reason strangers roll their eyes when they hear me order a dish sans meat, and it is because Opal’s attitude is espoused by too many vegetarians. It really isn’t necessary to dump a value judgment in every discussion of food, and is especially unwelcome in a discussion of a weird food choices.

I like sweet and savory combos too, as well as weird textures. Love a balsamic reduction on vanilla ice cream or grilled pinapple, peaches, and figs, and I grill or roast rather most savory vegetables so they brown and carmelize nicely. I shake cubed sweet potatoes with cayenne and chili powder before roasting. My favorite sandwich is cream cheese and sliced olives on dark rye. Rice crispies stirred into softened ice cream is fun to eat and stretches the serving a bit.

An old boss of mine liked pickle spears and maple syrup, I was not a fan.

Long Island Iced Tea: rum, vodka, gin, triple sec, soda and coke…sounds like a frat house dare, but they’re awesome.

Should also have tequila in there (I just remember the drink as having “five whites” [clear alcohols]) as well as either sweet & sour mix or lemon juice with simple syrup.

Heretic! Purge him with fire!

shrug That’s how I’ve always been taught, and that’s the official IBA recipe, too.

ETA: In fact, Wikipedia states: “A true Long Island Iced Tea, as it was originally made, has always had tequila.” No citation beyond that, though.

Oh man, a lot of these sound so good to me right now bc I’m so hungry. I’ll have to save this thread so I can try a bunch of these later. That would be so cool if during a dopefest people had a pot luck of exotic and bizarre foods.
Inspired by your delicious suggestions, I just decided to put a little balsamic vinegar on a stuffed clam. It’s pretty good.

That made me laugh way too much.

They really are good - and they sneak up on you, too. One minute you’re sitting there drinking them, the next you try to get up to go to the bathroom and your legs are missing!

I didn’t mean to threadshit and if that’s how it came across, I’m sorry. However I don’t think I ever placed a value judgment on anything besides “that doesn’t sound good to me.”

I am so going to try this! Sounds so much better than sliced green grapes with miracle whip on wheat bread.

Fair enough. Could have been my misinterpretation.

Mmmm…Sesame Cheescake

Jelly omelets – An omelet with jelly (has to be red currant jelly, no other flavor will do) instead of cheese.

A tradition at my summer camp when I was a kid was York peppermint patties with peanut butter on them. They gave us patties for dessert twice in 3.5 weeks, and everyone was always so excited about getting them.

Hot bag of microwave popcorn + bag of M&Ms. Pour the M&Ms into the popcorn. They melt but the candy shell stays intact, so you get nice warm bursts of liquid chocolate in with the salty popcorn.

I used to make strawberry jelly omelets when I was growing up. They were quite tasty, though I’m not sure if I’d enjoy them now. When I cook eggs these days I rarely miss it as an opportunity to eat more chili and/or cheese.

My brother’s idea of a good snack used to be sardines and navel oranges.

They actually complement each other quite well.
