For Better or For Worse: WTF is up with the ending this week? (open spoilers)

This week, Elizabeth went to a school reunion. Anthony (a former love) was there with his pregnant bitch of a wife.

As Elizabeth is leaving, Anthony offers to walk her to her car (it’s icy out). She declines. On Friday, she slips and falls!

Today, we learn she’s dislocated her knee in the fall.

WTF?

Injuring a character to make a bad point?

Of course, I did fear the worse. I figured she’d hit her head and end up in a coma or some such.

Lynn Johnston often does things like this in her strip. She uses things that have happened in her life and the life of her family. It just makes things richer and better. This is one of the reasons that her comic is one of my favorites.

Elizabeth’s injury wasn’t as important as the EMT’s comment that on New Year’s Eve someone always ends up hurt.

The question is who is hurt more: Elizabeth physically or Anthony and his wife emotionally?

Anthony’s wife obviously has deeper problems. Anthony’s whipped. So I’d go with Elizabeth.

It just means that the master plan of the–bwah-ha-ha!–Therese/Kortney Cabal is nearing fruition!

I would too. Maybe this is a bit of foreshadowing.

I’m definitely working under that assumption. I will be really surprised if today’s strip is the end of this storyline.

And I too was worried that her injuries were going to be more serious. Just goes to show you how much I enjoy the strip, I guess. I grew up reading For Better or Worse, and it’s definitely the strip I enjoy the most on an emotional level.

Therese is a major paranoid bitch. But Anthony’s got no spine, so he deserves her. I say “bleh” to both of them…go with Copter Boy, Liz!

Exactly. One of the things I get from the strip is “life happens.” It really is a well written strip and deserves more attention.

THis is the only comic I read and now my paper has moved it off the comic page and into the “FLair” section or wherever they can fit it. It seems the content was too mature or something for the comic page. Much like they put doonesbury in the editorial section. But they also print Dear annie or Abbey right next to the comics, which is not so great when I know my 8 yo is reading the funnies and then moving on to desperate tales of adultery etc…

I thought Liz and Anthony were gonna hook up when he was still engaged, I say let Therese have him and go for copter boy Liz.

Therese had a very strange expression on her face in today’s strip. I think we’ve not heard the last of this.

Knowing Therese, it was a “She only did that to get Anthony’s attention, and ruined my New Year’s!”

Look. A “She only did that to get Anthony’s attention, and ruined my New Year’s!” LOOK.

:smack:

i did a lot of “oh good grief, get over it already!” yelling at therese this week.

most interesting reveal in the ladies room regarding the baby.

i have very little patience with that degree and sort of jealousy. the number one reason i broke my engagement.

after seeing today’s comic i’m wondering how eliz. will get back up north, what will happen with her job, and the biggie…what will happen with the kitten!!!

What was the whole gossip session in the ladies’ earlier in the week, about the baby not being his, and the marriage breaking up? They were referring to characters I don’t remember.

I don’t think Liz has any interest in Anthony - they’re just old pals, as far as she’s concerned. And she doesn’t want to make trouble for him with his wife.

The baby is his. What Therese meant was that since he wanted a family, the baby is his responsibility to raise. She will be the breadwinner, and he will take care of the kid.

Robin

No, Anthony is the father of Therese’s baby. The deal is that Therese reportedly told him, “You want a baby so much, after it’s born it’s yours. I will go back to work as soon as the doctors say I can, and you will stay home and be Mr. Mom.”

On preview, what MsRobyn said.

Still, as Liz pointed out, this is not unheard of. I think what’s meant to be horrible is that Therese purportedly gave an order, rather than this decision being reached after discussion between both parties. But bear in mind that this is powder-room gossip. That might not be precisely the way it went down.

My take: I’m not sure Therese is entirely off base with her jealousy. Seems like a dad-to-be’s first thought should be “Thank god it wasn’t my pregnant wife who fell! I could have lost her AND the baby!..Anyway, Liz, are you okay?” Instead, he’s apologizing to Liz for not having walked her to her car!

WTF? Anthony is not responsible for Liz’s safety at all times. He made the offer to walk Liz out, but that should have been a courtesy, not an obligation. His first duty is to his wife and fetus. Sure, Liz is a friend, but if that truly is all she is, it should be, to him, a matter of “Wow, this really sucks,” not “It’s all MY fault!”

See, you can’t have these discussions about “Marmaduke”

He still has the hots for Elizabeth. I’m sure he was thinking of her when he knocked up the Ice Princess.

Well, that’s what I’m getting at, Mr. Blue Sky. He’s being somewhat of a cad.
