For Better/Worse 5/16

I don’t understand what is happening in today’s strip-

Strip

(Hopefully that link always points to 5/16 strip and doesn’t change with the date).

Summary-

Grandpa Jim is working through language excercises. The therapists asks him a series of questions and has him raise his hand if the answer is yes. He keeps his hand up after she tells him to put it back down…

For some reason this is significant and the threapist calls for his wife, Iris.

Color me confused.

He has to go to the bathroom…hence the “men” symbol in his thought baloon.

Wow, that was a quick reply!!

Ok- I can see that! I guess a little subtle for me at 6:30 am!

But how did the therapist know?

Was she just that intuitive or does Canada have magic thought-bubble-reading speech therapists I don’t know about??

You mean you don’t see thought bubbles over everyone’s heads? :dubious:

I don’t know this for sure, but I think it was meant to be implied that perhaps he had wet his pants.

Or his eyeballs were turning yellow?

I think it was the whole raisng the hand and waving it thing – a throw back to grade school when that’s what you did if you had to be excused to go to the bathroom.

I was more confused by the “IRIS !!!” in the last panel – did she fall down or have a heart attack or something? It took a minute for me to process that it (probably) just meant the therapist was calling Iris to help Jim.

And this strip IMO is a great example of how boring and unfunny the strip has become. If I hadn’t read it for the past 20 years, I can’t imagine I would be interested in it at all.
