Almost 24 hours a day, almost every day. Some years back they pulled this shit with That 70’s Show and before that Saturday Night Live.
Do their program directors have any data showing this is a solid strategy for keeping viewers? Only play one specific show all day every single day all year long? Because it’s boring the piss out of me! There are a zillion other shows and stand-up specials it’d be nice to see once in a while.
But even if they did this to a show I liked it would suck. Play 1 or 2 episodes and move on. Or have one marathon weekend and be done. Who runs a television channel under the philosophy of having no variety whatsoever? We only want the spaz types who dig The Office to watch our channel?
I’ve noticed this too and have stopped even looking at Comedy Central when I’m flipping channels. A few months ago they cancelled almost all of their live action shows including Drunk History (which I always thought was funny) and Tosh.0. At the time I saw an article that said that they were going to focus on their animated shows running forward.
I don’t know much about running a TV network, but I think we’re seeing the end of Comedy Central.
Apparently they’re remaking what programming they’ll be showing going forward. So at the moment the Office is probably relatively cheap and easy for them to show until they get their new format up and running. I may have spoken too soon in my previous post about the network dying, but it’s certainly going to be different so we’ll see how it turns out.
So it’s like when radio stations change format and they play some song for 24 hours during the format change, only in this case they’re playing a lot of “The Office” while they do so?
This seems to be a trend with a lot of networks. They must buy the rights to a show for a time and then milk it for all it’s worth. Some other channel does this with Big Bang Theory and Modern Family. Okay shows but it’s literally all they show.
LAFF (a .# sub-network on one of my broadcast channels) had a How I Met Your Mother marathon over the holiday weekend.
The channel seems to air a bunch of episodes in a row (According to Jim from 3-5, Home Improvement from 5-8, etc)
It is “nice” when I want background tv that I don’t really have to pay close attention to. I can flip on Comedy Central (or whatever stations are running Law & Order marathons) and do whatever else, but look up every so often if something funny is going on. Or not. Because whatever funny thing it is will happen again.
