The repetition would be excused if we finally find out why Dora is so insecure. Deep, dark past and all that. I don’t think that’s going to happen, I don’t see any interesting ground to plow. But maybe I’ll be surprised.
But, jeez – we got the speech about how she got over being all goth and insecure on the very night she got with Marten! Yes, 700 (give or take) strips ago.
I’d like some backstory on Dora. I think we’ve gotten a bit now on Marten and QUITE a bit on Faye. I’m not interested enough for backstory on Steve or Raven. I still don’t feel like I really know Dora, other than the fact that she was a goth in high school, has a brother Sven, and a super busty mom.
I actually think that backstory on Raven would harm the character, since she’s basically a walking punchline. Also, she’s like sixteen, so there’s not a lot of backstory to give. What are we going to find out about? That totally embarrassing time in sixth grade when she got her period for the first time and she had to ask the school nurse for “supplies”, but she only had the big pillow pads, and Raven was wearing leggings and miniskirt, so it was really obvious, and that’s why she always carries an OB in her sock? Raven’s kind of living her backstory right now.
As for the 1066 thing, apparently I way over-thought my medieval history. Pfft. My idea is brilliant, though, and if this results in Pintsize and Winslow staging some sort of uprising that results in civil war, I will be incredibly pleased.
Raven is definitely at least Dora’s age. At one point, Dora says that the reason Raven has stretchmarks is not because she developed breasts early, but because she was about 15 lbs heavier in college.
I think Raven is just supposed to be a dumb kid who sometimes manages to say actually intelligent things. They tend to dump the negative stereotypes of emo/hipster kids onto her.
Actually, I like the current character design of all three of those ladies quite a bit; Jeph has really done a great job evolving their look. Though I do think I preferred Raven a little earlier in the strip, when she had a more wide-eyed innocent look, vs. the pink-hair version currently appearing. It just punched up her rare insightful moments that much more.
Dora *is *being a bitch, but maybe what’s behind it is the fact that she has said “I love you” to Marten and he didn’t say it back. They had a conversation about this a while back and she was very reassuring and cool about it. But no one likes to say “I love you” to a boy and not have him say it back. I think Dora’s into this a little more seriously than Marten is (she’s older than him, isn’t she?) and it’s gnawing at her.
"Man I was so tired last night that I completely mixed up the dates of the Magna Carta and the battle of Hastings. Thanks to everyone who corrected me.
