In this thread, Zsofia came up with the idea of collecting Doper donations for a cancer charity in the name of Sampiro’s mom. I thought that was a great idea, and thanks to **Ginger of the North ** and SkipMagic, I’m able to post this thread.
If you are one of the many who has enjoyed Jon’s contributions here over the years, you probably feel that you know him and his family. You’ll also know that they are going through a dark time right now. If you can spare any small amount, please help us make this positive gesture and maybe add a little light to the darkness.
Ginger has kindly offered her Paypal account as a collection site. She will accept donations there until September 17th (one month from now) and then send them on to The American Cancer Society. The address is GingeroftheNorth @ hotmail.com. She will confirm amounts received by e-mail. Note: There will be a small service charge on amounts paid by credit card, approximately 3%. At the end of the month, she can provide me with a screenshot showing the lump sum we have sent.
Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any problems or questions. My e-mail address is juliarmstrng @ yahoo.com. Thank you!
As I understand some will be reticent to send money to someone they don’t know, I will send a screenshot to you in your email, showing how much was collected. I will keep a running tally and provide it to Dung Beetle (anonymizing per her request). That way I will be accountable to the donator and to another party.
I appreciate the line of thinking here - it’s very sweet, generous and kind-hearted - but I’m not sure it’s directly helpful to Jon.
Also, I have a nagging doubt about whether it’s something his mother would like. From everything I’ve read of his mother I haven’t seen anything that’d indicate she would like or want anything done in her name that wasn’t actually done *by *her - if you get what I mean? I’m not saying the intent isn’t genuinely lovely and very, very thoughtful …but I’m just not sure of how it’d be received.
I’d be considerably more inclined to donate to Jon, really, as I imagine he could use the cash what with the extra expenses he’d be incurring - in petrol, at the very least, and probably from time off work as well. Is there any way we could collect to give money to him direct? Does anyone here know him IRL?
I agree, this isn’t a direct help to Jon. It’s more of an attempt to let something good come out of something bad.
I think plenty of us would do something for Sampiro himself if we could, but I don’t know him IRL. I also have some doubts as to how that would be recieved. However, I do promise to buy at least one copy of the book as soon as it is published.
I’d really rather not get my personal finances involved more than my paypal account.
If you would like to send it right to the American Cancer Society, perhaps that’s the best solution. You can donate online at their website. I really don’t think it matters that there is a name attached, just that it’s done.
