Usually I get the tech jokes in FoxTrot, but today’s went totally over my head, probably because I know nothing about iPods. Can somebody please clue me in?
I was going to post the same question, Scarlett.
What’s with the shadowy look?
Nobody in my family gets it either.
That’s Apple’s iPod marketing thing. On TV, they have somebody dancing as a black shadow with a white iPod on a single-color background. They use the same thing in other types of ads–Philly 30th St. Amtrak station had a bunch of these huge banner ads where that’s exactly what it was.
Thank you,asterion.
I had a feeling that it had to be a marketing thing.
I don’t watch all that much TV, but others in my family do, I’m surpised they did not catch on.
Maybe the ad hasn’t been all that prominent here in Denver.
We live in the Northeast. I guess we just don’t watch the right TV shows as none of us had a clue either.
I didn’t get it either. What was the purpose of the sweater comment?
Guess I need to watch more TV.
Here’s one of the iPod commercials.
I think the sweatshirt comment was because he dyed everything black, or something.
Um, yeah, thanks! I guess I’ve missed that commercial as well.
I live in the northeast and I’ve never seen tv commercials for iPods either. I have however seen many a subway/bus shelter ad like that, though.
Just count me in as another happy iPod owner…
My first reaction to today’s FoxTrot: “What the…?”
My second reaction was to stare at it for a while, rack my brains—and still all I could come up with was “What the…?”
My third reaction: “I hope somebody brings this up on the SDMB so I can get an explanation. I can’t be the only person baffled by this.”
So, thanks, folks. I still don’t get it, but now I know why I don’t get it.
Explanation from Bill Amend himself:
Amend is, of course, a Mac lover, and has used Apple products (or Apple-like products, such as “iFruity”) over the years for gags. I’m sure some of them have missed their mark. I imagine a number of people were confused when he used Ellen Feiss as a punchline a while back.
I too had no clue and am glad someone asked. I was gonna, but am easily side-tracked.
On the other hand, it gives the Mac users extra-loud giggles when they get the inside joke in one of those strips…
