Frasier Reboot; Threat or Menace?

You should probably expand your viewing choices outside of the broadcast networks.

I think that’s a large part of it, although I think the popularity of the reboots and revivals has something to do with it. And very few of the reboots are really interesting, IMO. Battlestar Galactica of a decade ago, is about the only one, and the rest seem to be just rehashes of the old stuff- what makes the new Magnum P.I. interesting, for example? Nothing that I can see.

Revivals make more sense to me, in that often a show just sort of grows stale without having any fundamental problems, and just need some time to have some events (life, current, etc…) build up for the characters to deal with. I mean, there could have been some very funny pandemic-centric Will & Grace episodes, for example.

But otherwise you’re absolutely right. There are dozens of channels/streaming services all of which are competing for limited viewing time, and while it can be great for consumers who often get to watch a more tailored set of TV programs than otherwise, it also means that the viewer base is much more fragmented, and the competition is much more fierce. It is definitely true that viewership has gone down precipitously for any given show- for example, on this list of the top 100 shows of 2019-2020, the best non-sports show was NCIS, with 15.3 million people watching on average, followed by FBI with 12.6. By comparison in 2002, Friends averaged 24.5 million viewers per episode, and the article goes on to point out that in 1995, 27.3 million people watched a rerun of Grace Under Fire on a Tuesday night.

Paramount+ is CBS All-Access with a new name.

I enjoyed Frasier and I’ll watch the revival. I hope Niles and Daphne have a bunch of kids. Niles dealing with all that …

Teenage David will either be the direct opposite of Niles or exceed him in fussiness.

I liked Frasier. I even sometimes have Frasier reruns in the background. The problems are
1 - they ran out of ideas three years before the show ended. The final few seasons are kind of painful.
2 - I have no interest in what the Cranes are doing today. It closed in a very good place. There were no open questions. They were settled. Let the fictional people alone.

One Day at a Time was quite good.
I heard good things about DuckTales, Queer Eye, and Twilight Zone.

But one of those is a cartoon. The rest kept the premises and the names, but didn’t exhume the old characters and cast. They moved on.

And being on the same night as Freinds and Seinfeld, IIRC

I fully disagree they ran out of ideas - Nile’s Valentines prep is still the funniest 5 minutes of TV since Tim Conway finished dentistry school.

That helped, but Frasier was really well-written and funny. Not everything in the NBC Thursday night slot succeeded but this show did.

I started watching it because it was a Cheers! spinoff.

Sure, and I watched Joey because it was a Friends spinoff. But it was awful.

I’ve never liked Friends, but Cheers! was great.

It was inevitable; once they finished rebooting high quality shows like “Lost in Space”, “Full House” and “Saved by the Bell”.

I was in London for a while when the Lost in Space movie was in town. It had already flopped in the US. Some actor was on the radio talking about what a huge hit it was in the US. The main cinemas down in Leicester Square had a huge two-story-tall display to advertise the movie.

Actors lie. Imagine that.

According to the Wikipedia article on the show, the reboot will be next year and on Paramount+, which means that I’ll never see it.

Maybe you won’t see it when it first airs but you’ll be able to catch it some day, which is what I can say about most of the original Frasier episodes I’ve seen. There are entire sitcoms I’ve only seen in reruns.

Frasier had a child with Lilith. His name was Frederick.

Frederick was born Nov. 2, 1989, so he’s now in his 30s.

And the actor, Trevor Einhorn, was recently a regular on The Magicians, so no reason at all not to have the same actor back. Even though recasting may happen anyway.

I’d completely forgotten about that. Nice catch.

Frederick Gaylord, to be precise.
