Freakin' Philly Sports

Schilling is gone.

Lindros is gone. Even if he signs, they will send him down to the minors so they don’t have to pay him.

Iverson could be gone within the next week and definitely will be gone before training camp.

I want a damn championship in this city while I am alive. WTF!!!

Cubs and BoSox fans, you still have Sammy and Pedro. Throw some sympathy our way.

Well, at least you have Tom Prince, Nazr Mohammed, and Koy Detmer. Oh, wait a minute.

Say…what’s Mitch Williams doing these days? His buddy Joe Carter wants to say Hi.

:: flees from the room giggling like a schoolgirl ::

After Mitch got three death threats he moved out of Philly.

I actually saw him and Joe Carter (who, I have been assured by an omnipotent force, shall burn in one of the lower levels of hell) bowling together on ESPN2.

Oh, do we have sports in this city? I was under the impression all we have of worth are Republicans.

Well, you live in a city where you boo Santa Claus, what do you expect? Brotherly love? stiffles a guffaw

This actually might have been a GOOD trade. (I realize Padilla got hit today, but be patient with him. He has good stuff)

And I’m sure the Ashby one was–Chen could be as good or better than Ashby really soon.

Not paying J.D. Drew the money he wanted, and giving nearly that much to Burrell the next year, might not have been the best move (nothing against Burrell, but Drew could be better and you guys could have had both of them!

Also, Bobby Estalella for Chris Brock wasn’t a great idea.
Now if they ever give up Scott Rolen or Bobby Abreu, I take this all back.

Was Mitch Williams throwing strikes?

Mitch isn’t throwing strikes. I’ve caught some ads on a Philly radio station that Wild Thing and The Krukster are doing appearances at some local Philly bars and you are invited to come out and join them. So i guess the only thing Wild Thing is tossing anymore is the 12 ouncers.

I’m kinda surprised that he hasn’t had his ass kicked yet by some drunken buffoon, let alone having the base-BALLS to show up in philly after the death threats and all.

I have no sympathy for Philadelphia fans (at least Eagles fans) after they cheered Michael Irvin’s neck injury. A man goes down crunching his neck, possibly paralyzed, and the fans cheer. I don’t care how much you dislike a particular team, or how many touchdowns a particular player has burned you for, there is no excuse for relishing and rejoicing something as serious as this. Rot in Hell, those who cheered.

Missed that one. What gives?

Oh, Santa was at a parade or an Eagles game or something - and the crowd booed him. I don’t know the details - it ain’t MY city! I’m a New Yorker…

They pelted Santa with snowballs at Eagles games. WE’ll boo anyone anytime anywhere. But we also give respect to the more bluecollar-esque athletes out there. We still cheer for Rod Brind’amour and Jim Eisenreich when they come back into town.

DRY: I think they didn’t pay Drew on principle. He was such a dick about the money. He had a pro mentality when he was still an amateur. You’re right. The Estaella trade was horrible.

At least the Phillies have an excuse! How would you feel is your team kept all the high priced proven veterans and still got beat on a regular basis. Watching my Orioles get assaulted and battered by the Yankees the other day to the tune of 19-1, I kept wondering when they were going to invoke the slaughter rule.

I’m a Philly native, and I’m trying to spread our particular brand of cheering here in Baltimore. So far all it’s gotten me is poisonous looks at Camden Yards. But I’ll turn them around yet.

True, and it’s a good point. However, if I’m not mistaken, they turned around the next year and paid Burrell a comparable amount of money. In my opinion, Drew’s better, and should have gotten that money over Burrell (I think they’re both good players, Burrell might have more power but Drew has more speed, more defensive ability, and possibly more plate discipline as well).

As for Estalella, I understand why they dealt him (they were happy with Lieberthal), I just think they should have addressed an area of need (SS–unless Jimmy Rollins gets the position, 2B–unless Chase Utley can handle the position defensively or a better pitcher than Brock) and gotten more for him. Should have been pretty obvious that Estalella had pretty good power, and fair value for a catcher.

Philly’s treatment of Eisenreich was first class. Actually, once people understood his problem, he was fairly well received everywhere.

Mitch And Krukker are now the ostensible owners of a sports bar on the 400 level of Veteran’s stadium. They may, in fact, have only lent their names, but they do show up occasionally to play host and shake hands. The food (the one time we were there) was just okay but way over-priced. A variety of beers, though, which made the rain delay bearable.

Grendel69, I’m a season-ticket holder. I feel your pain.

BTW, Santa was asking for it, if you ask me…

Down here in DC, I try to see the Phils when they’re in the Yard against the O’s, and the Flyers when they’re at the Phone Booth against the Caps. (It’s impossible to get Skins/Eagles tickets, and I don’t give a damn about the Sixers since Dr. J retired.)

I always get verbally abused by whomever the latest Philly tragedy is: this week it’s Schilling, last month it was Lindros, etc. One day, all will be well again. We were close in 93, again in 97 and this year – next year we’ll do it.

Anyway, the recent trades:

Ashby was a cocksucker (hey, this is the Pit). He was so excited to be traded to the Phils over the winter, but as soon as he hit some trouble (opening day) and got booed, his skin got thin and he whined his way to Atlanta. Now that’s he’s throwing well there, I can’t wait til he comes back with the Braves (next year) so we can boo him again.

I’m really sad to trade Schilling, since he was the Phils for the last eight years. But, the realities of the situation were to trade him. And, of all the potential suitors, I’m most glad that he went to the D-backs, since I loathe the Yankees, Mets, Braves, and Indians. I’ll be rooting for the D-backs like I did for the Marlins in 97 after Dutch Daulton was traded to them for the pennant run.

I’m sorry I’m missing Harry Kalas Appreciation Night at the Vet tonight. “That ball is outta here!”

The Shilling trade was good for the Phillies(but bad for my Dodgers). They weren’t going to be able to re-sign when his contract was up, and the longer they waited, the less they would get.

I believe that Daal will come around and find his form. Lee, given time, will make his adjustments and hit again. If either of the 2 prospects come through, well thats gravy.

That being said, WHY THE HELL DIDN’T THE DODGERS TRY TO GET HIM!!!

I have no sympathy for Philadelphia fans (at least Eagles fans) after they cheered Michael Irvin’s neck injury. A man goes down crunching his neck, possibly paralyzed, and the fans cheer.

Come on, now. Aside from the fact that nobody in the stands knew his neck was severely injured when he went down, Irvin is a complete thug who cavorts around with hookers, uzis and cocaine and also had the balls to take a pair of scissors to the neck of one of his team mates. (While most NFL players aspire to maybe get on the front of a Madden video game, Irvin ends trying for Clock Tower).

The guy had taunted and ruined Philly for the better part of ten years. Damn straight they were happy to see him go down. If the hit was immediately followed by a close-up of the play and his neck throbbing and spewing spinal fluid – then yes: anyone who cheers at THAT is morally bankrupt. But in the same way you’d be happy to see Al Capone, Jeffery Dahmer or Doctor Doom get pasted just once, a guy who has carried himself with exactly zero respect for his talent and the game of football getting pasted in what seemed to be a non-career-ending injury can be momentarily satisfying.

If you want to give sympathy to somebody, try my boys Cam Cleeland, Steve Israel and Rob Kelly who were all carted off the field tonight… and are all ten times the man Irvin will ever be.

Coming from a Chicagoan, do you guys really boo that much? I’ve heard this all my life, but have never quite believed it (it sounds a little too pat). But who knows? To quote Jay Johnstone:

“In Philly, well, I don’t want to call the fans vicious, but they do boo just to boo. They don’t care what you do. They still boo. They really do love the Phillies, but if the ball game was rained out, they’d all go down to the airport and boo landings.”

-Jay Johnstone, “Temporary Insanity,” 1985

Any thoughts?
