Would it kill you to not fucking SUCK for ONCE? You’ve got loyal fans who’ve never seen you so much as make the playoffs, and you just gave up a series-clinching run in the eighth to the motherfucking ROCKIES? What the fuck?
I’m off to get drunk, and eagerly await the reports of rioting in Philly by tomorrow morning.
If there wasn’t rioting after the Eagles choke-job at the end of XXXIX, there won’t be rioting for this. I am wondering if people will show up at the airport to boo the team as they get off the plane though. Philly fans have a way of making it hard for anybody else to feel sorry for their lack of championships.
In reality, the Rockies played pretty damn well and the Phillies…were like the baseball equivalent of post-finals seniors. I don’t know where the hell they were, offensively or defensively, but they weren’t on the diamond the past three games. So, yeah, good game ad all that jazz.
And again, dammit, Phillies. You broke my heart when I was seven and now you did it agin.
Well, the Phillies did play great down the stretch, but if the Mets hadn’t completely collapsed Philadelphia wouldn’t have even been in the playoffs. Also, the Rockies are easily the hottest team in the playoffs.
Heh, yeah, I guess that was. We can still be friends though, so long as we avoid baseball talk for a while.
asterion is rights - the Phillies didn’t really ‘belong’ there anyway. But damn did it get a lot of people’s hopes up.
I’m tempted to not even dignify this with a reply, but I’ll just point out that a last-minute choke is pretty typical for the Phillies, whereas the Mets just set some sort of record for kicking their own ass at the end of this season.
I didn’t really mean it that way. The Phillies didn’t “belong” in the playoffs the same way the Steelers didn’t “belong” in Superbowl XL. They won their games and had the best record in the NL East and belonged in the playoffs. It’s just surprising that they made it into the playoffs because of the normally insurmountable lead the Mets had going into September. Honestly, if the Phillies played exactly the same down the stretch but the Mets had maintained a 4 or 5 game lead to make the playoffs, would you have been as disappointed?
After seeing Jimmy Rollins strut over the Phils overtaking the collapsing Mets, it’s sort of satisfying to see the Phillies tank against a wild-card team, while Rollins hits a stunning .182 for the playoffs.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Mets and Phils retool for another season in the dynamic N.L. East. Maybe they can pull off a big trade (Mota and Schoeneweis should be available cheaply from the Mets for a team wanting to upgrade its bullpen :rolleyes: ).
It’s okay; there there. {Pats NinjaChick on the shoulder}
I should say that I’m a baseball fan by proxy. My husband is a huge baseball fan; I just like it. I have no particular allegiances. I was a Yankees fan for part of this year just to bug him.
The failure of the Phillies was only surprising because it was quick and merciful, like a gunshot to the temple. I fully expected them to eke out a victory last night, keep the phans excited, sell more red stuff, pack the stadium, and then end game five by doing something very Philly-esqe, such as fucking up a 12 run lead in the 8th inning. This didn’t exact near the level of phanquish of which they are capable.
Hey-they won in 1980, so they’re due again about the time my 12 year old daughter kisses her first grandchild.
Tonight I shall hope that my beloved Yanks do not suffer from a similar 3 games in the crapper fate.
Erm…yes? I’m referring to the 1993 World Series. Which, I’ll have you know, was in fact traumatic for me, because I was going through a crazy baseball phase, to the point where my parents took me to a couple games that year. Man, I was so excited, and distinctly remember the disappointment.
