I own my domain name, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. A while ago, I had a free site via our internet provider, AT&T, but they were bought out. Yahoo seems to want a LOT of money. Comcast, my current provider…OK…well, I tried to look on their site to see if I was entitled to some web hosting…and their site doesn’t work well enough to answer my question. “parameter missing” or somesuch.
joomla junkie seems to have some great templates for cheap. But don’t I need a site first?
I swear, I did this myself 5 years ago. My template was plain, but still. Worked just fine. But the industry’s changed, hasn’t it.
Many places offer sites for “free”; however, my personal experience is that you very much get what you pay for. Most often, you are required to subject your would-be viewers to any of a number of flavors of annoying advertising.
(note - like I said, that’s just my own experience… if someone knows a place to get free hosting that doesn’t blow chunks, I’m sure many folks here would appreciate you giving us the skinny.)
That being said, you can find quite a few places that offer inexpensive packages for web hosting. I’ve been using Bluehost and have nothing but good things to say about them, but I’m sure there are dozens of that offer similar pricing/features/whatnot.
Several of my sites are hosted through Tigertech in San Jose.
Hosting starts at $6.95/month ($6.25 if you pay for a year in advance) - it includes 5GB disk space, 250GB bandwidth, 50 POP3 email addresses, and your domain name registration is included in that price! And you own the domain, not Tigertech.
No contract, either, If you pay for a year in advance, and cancel 6 months into it, they will refund the remainder of your money.
Easy to get along with, good uptime, and fantastic service. Highly recommended.
Microsoft’s Office Live Small Business is an excellent way to creat basic to moderately advanced website for free including a free domain name (I suspect there is also a means to trasfer your current name, but I’m not personally familiar). No advertisements except for a small Live search bar up-top and a Microsoft logo on the bottom.
