Besides, what more could Iran give us besides peace? We can’t rule their country, we can’t take any of their land, we can’t take their oil or other resources. We’re good at blowing things up, but exerting our will on a land a thousand miles away is far beyond our capabilities even if we wanted to. We’re not the U.S.; we’re just a small country with problems closer to home. Peace and recognition are the greatest victory any Israeli government could dream of claiming.
This Iranian government appears to be no more capable/willing of offering long-term peace than this US government is capable/willing of respecting the due process rights of migrants and minorities (or, for that matter, than this Israeli government is capable/willing of respecting the rights of Palestinians in the WB and protecting them from settler thugs).
An Iranian government with a “peace with Israel/America” platform would just be making it that much harder for them to stay in power. Especially if they took over from the present regime; they might as well cut their own throat. Short of the US or Israel nuking them into unconditional surrender I don’t see it as happening.
Oh, I don’t think they’re stupid. I think they are venal, corrupt, amoral, and would make every attempt to spin a rejection of a peace deal as “the best thing for the country” using whatever lies and propaganda they could muster.
What Iran gives these politicians is… Power. As long as there is no peace.
And the same goes with the Iranian leadership; they need enemies like Trump, Netanyahu and so on. Evey bomb that falls on Iran or Israel increases support for their respective governments. Trump and company are most likely hoping to get in on the action as well, and that Iran will pull off a suitably spectacular terrorist attack on the US.
