Kobal, I understood what you were saying. In a world where he was supposed to be handed everything, he couldn’t get there. And all around him, I’m sure he saw guys less good looking, with fewer opportunities, not as much money, have success hand over fist. So, that had to be bewildering for someone spoiled and with zero self-awareness and no empathy. Also, there is a culture that caters to people just like that because they are attractive, wealthy, famous and it doesn’t matter if they’re an asshole or not.
So, where does that part come in? How as a society do we play any culpability when they kind of thing is rewarded? There are real life Gordon Gekkos. News outlets are already describing the video as “chilling”. It’s not “chilling”. It’s “douchey”. The more we make these guys chilling, the more the next guy wants his shot at it. I remember after the Virginia Tech shooting, there were some radio guys who acted out his terrible, embarrassing plays on air in order to make fun of how lame he is and I think that’s a much better way to go.

I don’t think it’s about attractive, wealthy, famous, yadda yadda dudes. At all. I do think modern society bears some burden for informally but organically “enforcing” (quotes because it’s not the right word or the right concept, but I’m drunk and I can’t come up with a better one right now) the notion that whoever you are, man or woman, rich or poor, you’re an utter failure if you can’t get any nookie. And that you oughta feel ashamed of yourself for that. “Ha ha, 21 year old virgin !”. See ? No ?
And that applies to everybody, though I’m sure that pressure applies even more to California trust fund celebrity kid. Not to the point of excusing, or even explaining, random murderous rampage kid.
But it’s still fucked up in every context, even if “all” it does it turn a given, random kid bitter, or resentful, or depressed, or whatever. Ultimately I think it kind of fucks most everybody up, albeit in different ways. It’s kind of weird and depressing how we seem to have gone from the 50s “If you fuck before or outside of marriage, you’re a whore/gigolo !” to “If you can’t get lots of sex, you’re a loser !”, when the sexual revolution was, I thought, about doing away with judgemental cunts and their toxic opinions.
I sure don’t have any answers or solutions to that state of affairs. And, again, I’m absolutely not innocent of that kind of thought pattern. But it still seems fucked up. To me.
Not to make light of the deaths and injuries in any way at all – but that video is a crime in and of itself.
Kobal, I agree with you that there exists a strong pressure in our society to represent one’s worth through their sexuality and friendship. In subtle and not so subtle ways, society shames the loner, the eccentric, and the socially awkward. The pressure to be vouched for by another person transcends all gender and class boundaries.
I just don’t know what the solution is. I’d love for people to stop making jokes about lonely 40-year-old virgins, but I just can’t see that happening any time soon.
