Well, yeah, a closer analogy might be “I dislike country music so much that I’ve disowned my relatives for listening to it”.
Which I’d find very rude and assholish.

Well, I think the idea that homosexual = pervert is highly offensive. As a straight man, I demand my rights to be as perverted as I wish. Screw anyone who says otherwise.
Or maybe what he’s really saying is “My relatives are interested in country music and line dancing, but I prefer to go to hip hop dance clubs. We don’t have anything in common, so we don’t hang out.”
My relatives sure as hell make no effort to go hang out in ‘geek culture’ to bond with me, in fact some of them don’t talk to me at all because they really have nothing to say. As long as pk doesn’t want to deny people equal protection under the law, I don’t really see why anyone should crucify him for exercising his freedom to associate with whom he chooses.
Isn’t this how this thread got started in the first place? Fenris, please cover pkbites’ eyes…

And on whatever basis he uses for that choice, catsix. I know people who would never come over my house if I had a pet spider. I don’t suppose for a second that to cure his “ignorace” regarding daddy long-legs that I should bath him in them.
Homosexuality is what it is. Until it is recognized as an un-status symbol (preferably by treating it like we treat all other sexuality, instead of holding it in legal and contractual contempt) these sort of things are going to stay a “big deal” when they simply aren’t.
IMO
Matt, I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been touched by your deep and keen insights so many times. Thank you for sharing yourself with us. God go with you always.
 Good heavens. Well, thank you, Libertarian, I do appreciate it.
Nobody’s compelling him at all. He freely chooses to remain here, which I find baffling.
I think the law needs to just treat people as people, and other than that I really don’t give a crap who won’t hang out with me because they don’t have anything in common with me.
I mean damn, if that bothered me, I’d have to sell my whole gun collection so all those people who think I’m a wacko gun nut militia conspiracy moron would come over to play.
All I wanna see is for everybody to have real, true, equal protection. Nobody more equal than anybody else. And then if pk wants to stay home, so what? He’s the one missing out on the party.
I was one of the people who defended PK in the original thread. I was afraid that a massive attack by other Dopers would force him from the SDMB.
I underestimated the Dopers. No one has tried to silence or banish PK.
So I defended a bigot for nothing.
I submit that this is punishment enough and humbly beg your forgiveness.
That’s nice, catsix, but nobody in this thread has called for denying pk his right to free association. We’re just saying that the particular basis on which he decides how to exercise that right makes him an asshole.
Are we really hijacking this into a flirt thread?
Because of course we’re not doing this as a joke to make pkbites uncomfortable…
And re: associating with people … I think the problem people had with pkbites’ words was that he was deliberately choosing not to associate with people based on a facet of their existence; you can listen to country music or not, but if you’re gay, you can’t exactly stop being gay.
I don’t care that he chooses not to associate with gays. Hell, I might switch-hit just to preclude the possiblity of him associating with me.
What pisses me off is his obnoxious language: had he said “Gay people make me uncomfortable and I avoid them when possible” I’d shrug, say “It’s a free country” and get on with my life.
When he starts calling friends “perverts”, however, that’s where I draw the line.
And while he has every right to say stupid, rude things, I have every right to mock him for it. Free speech does not guarantee immunity from the consequences of your words.
Fenris, crusader for JUSTICE
I can’t stop liking punk music, or horror novels, or cheesey television, either. So?
Oh, Fenris, no doubt about that. (Sorry, my previous post was directed in the general direction of iampunha)

Be still, my beating heart! Fenris, if ever you want to know about the other side of the fence, look me up. I’ll be happy to show you the ropes (and chains and whips and… pant drool )…
well, minty green, I guess you’re right. Nobody here has said that pk doesn’t have the right to free association.
But boy oh boy have the posts come out of the woodwork calling him an asshole for exercising it.
Then again I think people who have to look down on someone because of who that person chooses to spend time with and who not to are condescending assholes of the snobbish kind.
Cause of course it’s such an important thing to the personal life of every single doper who pk chooses to associate with. Really. His desire to avoid career women and his need to disapprove of their goals resonates with me. It does.
Oh wait. No it doesn’t. I don’t give a damn that he wouldn’t hang out with me or call me his friend.
I actually appreciate the fact that he wouldn’t hang out with me or call me his friend.
To have friends like that I would consider a personal flaw.
I’m curious about something. To read these posts it would seem that I am the only human being in the nation to believe that homosexuality is unnatural and wrong.
If that’s true, and I am the only person to feel this way, why, then, are homosexual acts still illegal in several states in the U.S… Surely not just to please me. In fact, I could care less what 2 consenting adults do in private. But I certainly don’t want people like that in my home breaking bread with me.
Anyway, seeing I’m “The Last American Homophobe”, I’d like to know why there are still laws outlawing homosexual acts.
Hmmm. Maybe it’s not just me. Maybe in those states it’s the GASP! MAJORITY of people who think this!
Oh, my!
So laws governing what two consenting adults can do in the privacy of their own home are a good thing?
And people wonder why we’re calling you an asshole.

Or maybe it’s just that a minority of absolute pricks with too much time on their hands (and too much gay sex on the brain, apparently) make it political suicide to try and get them changed…
Hell, there’ve been a few cases recently of people being charged for swearing in the vicinity of women. You telling me a majority of Americans support that, too?
