I’m torn between quoting A Man For All Seasons or just hoping he gets a brief suspension and/or topic ban.
So this is what terminal TDS looks like.
My thoughts exactly.
Clearly the OP is off base, but using TDS is whataboutism. Obama was amazingly normal and tried to build bridges between groups, but people spread outrageous theories starting with where he was born and getting increasingly kooky. With Trump you can just look at his own words. He really did call the press the enemy of the people. He really did ask if what SNL does should be legal. We are the metaphorical frog being boiled. Nothing about this presidency is normal. We’ve had worse times in this country, but never a president as bad as this one.
Terry Pratchett, Maskerade
And what Batano mentions are just the things Trump says to put himself in the press and distract from the crimes and general deadly foolishness of his cabinet.
Environmental policy matters. Keeping promised commitments to allies matters. Understanding the consequences of one’s actions, and having some empathy for those affected, is necessary in the job.
Seriously, I’m worried we may have to march on the White House en masse to depose him in some fashion, before he screws up anything else in the world.
It’s likely that OP is relatively calm in real life, but likes to blow off steam here. I can sympathize; many of us never dreamed that America would come to this; and are very saddened to think about it. I was alive during the civil insurrections of the 1960’s, but that era was opposite to this era in many ways.
Tell us about your friends and family who are Republican. Which best describes them?:
- they have especially low IQs.
- they are racists or homophobes.
- they are selfish slobs happy to hear of children dying if it means another dollar for them.
- they are deluded fools babbling about ‘teh Wall’ or ‘teh taxes.’
If you choose ‘None of the above,’ please explain.
Yes, I’m going to wait until then. And when (and more importantly if) it happens, you can tell me you told me so.
But if it doesn’t happen, you’re driving yourself crazy without need.
Keep some perspective. Yes, Trump is the worst President this country has ever had and he’s doing a terrible job. But he doesn’t have super powers. He’s actually pretty lazy and incompetent. In a few years, he’ll just be an annoying ex-President and we’ll have a nice sane Democrat running the country again.
They’re really staunch Catholics who are strongly opposed to abortions and they feel that Trump will appoint pro-life judges.
And the rest of the Republican party? What are you going to do about them? They won’t stop wanting what they want now, and they won’t stop behaving the way they do now. It’s okay to subvert democratic norms for the sake of power now. It’s okay to run on racist platforms now. It’s okay to be a fascist now that there are enough voters willing to vote for one to put one into power.
Don’t we already have a lot of Trump threads? I mean, fuck Trump, but I don’t see what new information or new point of view this one has to justify its existence.
It’s easy to despise that horrid criminal. But almost every Republican Congresscritter is also to blame. OP is directed against the gullible haters and morons who enabled Trump and his terrible, disgusting ilk.
The sad truth is that if this country gets fucked up to the extent alluded to up-thread, which may very well happen, it really won’t be because of Trump. He’s just an awful, annoying symptom that makes the whole situation even more miserable and dire. The optimistic view of the effects of the “Trump symptom” are that they will cause more awareness and prompt the patient(s) to seek the proper solutions.
In that order? Cos I’d probably fist-fight over soup last, if I had bread and water. I mean, depending on the soup.
I get that, but still. The OP is obviously a mentally disturbed individual. Just because you agree with him, doesn’t mean you have to humor him. I don’t want to see this board overrun by garbage posts like his.
I know what you’re thinking: “Everything is fucked up, the world is going to hell, and that moron Alessan is yammering on about civility?” The thing us, if you want to fix the world, you’re in the wrong place to do it. This board is utterly insignificant - nothing we do here will ever have any impact on the outside world. If you think the SDMB will help bring down Trump, then you’re as deluded as the OP. There are plenty of places where shouting will produce results; this is not one of them. Ranting here is like ranting on the New York Subway. The best think you can hope for is that you’ll be ignored.
So if you want to make a good argument, if you want to say something interesting, or informative, or funny, then you’re welcome to do it. I’ll certainly enjoy reading it. If you just want to shout, though, I wouldn’t waste my breath.
BTW, the above is just my opinion, of course. I am obviously no less insignificant than anyone else here.
The thing is, being hostile towards a depressed person, making them feel even worse about themselves, isn’t helpful to them. You aren’t resolving the problem. You’re just lashing out the same way he is.
Sure, there was a point where I used to get mad at him. But now I genuinely believe he is depressed as fuck. He’s not saying things that the rest of us don’t think at times–we just realize that it’s overly pessimistic and catastrophizing. You don’t have that when you’re depressed.
The thing is, this is the Pit, the place where we’re supposed to be able to vent. It seems silly to get mad at the guy for using for its appropriate purpose. As long as he keeps this shit to his own threads, why not let him go? I put him on ignore a long time ago, because nothing I say is going to help.
I hope that we are just seeing him vent when he’s here. There are times where he is more lucid. I hope those are most of the time.
I will at most suggest he engage in Christmas activities and try to forget about this stuff. I remind him that worry about this or being down about it won’t change anything. So go out and have fun.
The one thing I will not do is make it worse by attacking him again. Not now that I suspect there is a real underlying problem. And, frankly, I don’t blame him in the slightest. What’s going on in our country is genuinely awful. We shouldn’t have to deliberately go out of our way to forget about it in order to function as people.
And to those who would shit on me for this sort of post: fuck you, and merry Christmas.
I have some experience with severely depressed people, and I know that venting doesn’t help - more often than not, it only makes things worse. The best thing someone can for asahi, if he actually *is *depressed and not just an asshole (I don’t know him, so I don’t see a reason to give him the benefit of the doubt), is to give him a cup of hot chocolate and let him turn the world off for a while. He needs to accept his own situation first, though, and own up to it.
Also, there’s some very good medication out there. That isn’t me being snarky: that shit really works.
Thank you for demonstrating why Trump got elected and why the UK voted for Brexit. How dare those disgusting proles use their democratic vote to vote other than how I wish? How dare they not defer to my genius? How dare they?
Seriously, dude, chill. As Alessan suggests, hot chocolate is a good cure.
You mean Happy Holidays, right?
Oh, no. We won the War on Civility and Christmas. So now store clerks can say “Fuck you, and Merry Christmas!”
