That doesn’t really answer my question, and I didn’t say anything about violating democratic norms and the rule of law. In fact I think enshrining these democratic norms in law is a good idea; financial disclosure, for instance, shouldn’t be optional.
Anyway, what are you going to do about the rest of the Republican party? Putting a sane Democrat in the White House won’t help much if that president is surrounded by the likes of Ryan and McConnell, and it’s clear a lot of people will support the likes of Ryan and McConnell if the likes of Ryan and McConnell are willing to cater to their bigotries and prejudices in return for power they can then abuse.

Once in 2015, our neighborhood bar has an AutoTagz store in the same building. It’s privately owned. An older man parks, gets out walks very slowly with a cane. He asks us, “Where do I order my new license plates at?” I showed him the store was upstairs (two flights) and said, “Sorry, there’s no elevator.”
The man freaked out. Saying look at what Obama did to us. Putting DMVs on buildings without elevators! He went on for a minute or two.
We then told him that this is a place privately owned, having nothing to do with local or federal government. It’s an entrepreneurship. Owner’s name is Nick. I gave him directions to the nearest DMV.
THESE are the types of mentally ill persons that voted for Trump in the first place. Majority of people in this country don’t even know what the local or federal governments do and what they do for them. There are millions of them. And they are too gullible. A man says he’s rich, he’ll change the government to work for “you” when he really means “me”. They refuse to believe what’s in front of them.
It rather does, actually.
We can continue to stay on this side of the law and democratic norms and hope enough of our fellow citizens do the same that we can steer the ship back on course and keep it there. And continue to work on voter education and preserving the good stuff. And that’s what most people have been doing. If the results or the timing is not what you prefer, well, life doesn’t always work out the way we want or on our timetables. It’s a marathon and you’re already bitching about the heat and humidity half a mile into the race.
But there is the distinct possibility we run out of time or, despite our best efforts, we collectively continue to elect scoundrels and reprobates to high office who get and stay there by peddling bigotry, class warfare, and robber baron style corruption. We can continue to fight against that but that’s the thing about elections - we can continue to vote for terrible people time after time.
There’s no magical solution that prevents bad results in our form of government. So, it’s either conclude that representative democracy itself doesn’t work (Putin is rather fond of this conclusion) or keep plugging away, knowing the work will never ever end.
Or, there’s the approach presented here. Tear it all down, including the very parts we were trying to save in the first place.
