When I first read this thread, I rushed over to the original thread, ready to jump all over you (not you in particular, just whoever posted the link) with warnings and threats. However, I read your later posts in the original thread. Nothing I could say to you would make you feel worse than you already do. I hope that we all learned a lesson from your experience.

In an age of very easy sexual discrimination suits, I have seen this and much worse. I personally know of one person fired when a single pornogaphic image was found in their cache. They claimed it was an accidental link.
Over-reaction by the company? Certainly. But it is wrong to assume that just because the OP is worried about his employer’s reaction that he must be a multiple offender. I’m still not sure why everybody jumped on Phlip for his original comments (of course, once people started climbing up his ass, he did become very rude).
If I had been browsing around in my living room while my niece was nearby, only to have porn pop-up because I trusted the anti-porn rule at SDMB I would be pissed as well. I wouldn’t blame any specific person for it, I would recognize that there were ways I could avoid it, but I would still be very pissed at SDMB. I would suggest that you are being disingenuous if you claim you wouldn’t have started a pit thread if something at SDMB has caused you real life embarrassment.

Would I be embarassed if a porn ad popped up while my neice was watching me? Probably. I would then explain why these ads pop-up and probably install a pop-up killer to avoid the problem next time. I wouldn’t blame the SD, as I know it often contains topics of an adult nature. Sometimes the thead titles are even pretty explicit. I wouldn’t surf a website where thread titles include things like “What do you call your vagina?” and “Do you like anal sex?” or “Question about vaginal discharge” (I’m paraphrasing here).
In short, I would take personal repsonsibility for what pops up on my screen. This is not Disney.com, and no website can be assumed safe from pop-up ads, porn spam, or viruses.
I would guess that if his superiors saw that he was browsing “zdnet.com” or some other TECHNICAL site that had to do with his job, he wouldn’t have been diciplined. They probably are using Websense or some other tracking software and saw that he was on the SDMB looking at a thread about Brittney Spears. That is what I think is the most likely reason for his near termination.

obfusciatrist: By ‘humbly submit’ I did mean to convey that I was merely stating my personal assessment. I, of course, have no knowledge of Phlip’s situation other than what he has chosen to share. While it is possible that his company has some form of zero tolerance policy that results in a reprimand regardless of circumstances, my experience is that such inflexible rules are rare.
In addition to this incident, the OP does describe a similar experience with a flash development site. It’s not a fact, but it is my opinion that there is more to this story then ‘I followed a deceptive link and now my job is in jeopardy’.
I should also add that whatever I think of the OP’s tone, or his failure to take responsibility for his own actions, I would not want him to loose his job. That’s a stiff penalty, and I wouldn’t wish that on someone over such nonsense as this thread.

As far as the company policy thing, every company is different. My companies policy is a one hit rule. You hit one and are immediately banned from the net until the case goes up for review by the VP of Netops. It was here, you clicked on it while cruising on work time, got nailed and somwhow it’s the fault of:
- the SDMB for existing and occuping your energies
- the orignial poster
- the SDMB staff for not instantly protecting you against any cyber-nasties that could possibly compromise you with your employers.
I’ve never said this before, as regular poster or a mod.

I set the ground rules for my client’s office. If emails and internet surfing don’t have anything to do with work, they could be fired or disciplined for such activities.
Don’t blame your work, don’t blame the SDMB, blame the fact that you are using your employer’s resources for your enjoyment. Something that even the SDMB can get you fired for. You are stealing your company’s time…don’t like what I have to say? Fuck it, I don’t care. My client’s don’t pay their employees to play on the internet all day. They pay them to work and to work to get the job done.
Oh and BTW, I am not a militant IT person but if your company has issues about you playing on the 'net, then get your priorities straight. Oh and for those that don’t have a computer at home, either buy a used computer, a new computer with prepaid internet access or accept your company’s policies and understand that any email or web page or movement you make electronically can and could be traced, leading to your termination.
