Waverly, in his post about the rotten link, he described what one would find on the site and advised people not to follow it. He later said that he hadn’t expected the link in the post to be active and just wanted to let people know which site he was talking about. I don’t think any literate person would have clicked on that link accidentally.
Even before preview, you can find this statement directly below your composed post: “Automatically parse URLs: automatically adds [ url] and [ /url] around internet addresses”. After preview, of course, it becomes quite apparent that you have made a link. Even giving the utmost benefit of the doubt, the OP mistakenly made a link he should not have and it had to be removed by a mod, just like the OP in the thread that he claims deserves to be slapped. His ‘admonition’ not to visit said site seems to contradict the fact that he claimed he did not link it. Clearly at a minimum he knows he had provided a URL.
I realize that you are just trying to be fair, but in all honesty I think most of those being critical of Phliphave been fair.

Does anyone know what kind of work schedule Phlip works? Is he second or third shift or something like that? Because if you look at many of his posts they are during daytime weekday hours. Once he even said he was going to bed, and it was just past noon. So he either works late hours, doesn’t actually work, or he does still sneak in web access at his so-called job. Just wondering.

On 10-09 Philip posted at 11:24 PM, which is very close to the time he should have been at work if his original gripe is any indication. That post, and some others I’ve found in that time range, carry a static IP address, while his posts that aren’t near 11:30 PM seem to come from a dial-up service. This makes me believe that his office has a static address and he’s got dial-up service at home. Which would indicate that at least as of 10-09 he was still posting from work.
So that then would be the ability to find error in others’ judgment and point out how they’re wrong? For example, to point out to someone how their choice to click on a link unrelated to their job while they are at said job is not a fault in the SDMB but in said person’s ability to choose things conducive to, say, keeping their job. Like, say, not reading the SDMB when they should be at work.
If the Mods don’t catch something three minutes after it’s been posted late at night, and you, while at work, click on said thing, who here is at fault?
A) Mods who have lives
B) Person who shouldn’t be engaging in activities unrelated to work while at work

I’ve re-read the original post about a hundred times now and I still fail to see what set UncleBeer off. Up until that point, people were providing the kind of responses that everybody is now saying are not deserved. (Essentially, people were saying “that’s too bad”.)
The language that Phlip used is not unsuitable to the meaning he had. Only UncleBeer interpreted it to be a direct attack on the boards and on the moderators.
As I said before, there were many “causes” for what happened to Phlip, but the SDMB was certainly one of them. I still feel that Phlip was attached for no good reason and has responded in kind (though it shows no real talent for it).

I’m “lucky” that I’m not gainfully employed right now, and that I have my own computer at home with net connection. So, if I feel like a break, I can surf.
But – working for a crust means ya do what you’re paid for. This doesn’t mean I’m razzing the thousands of dopers and lurkers out there using their employer’s equipment to get onto SDMB – but if you’re doing it, and you get caught, that’s your own responsibility. And heaven knows there’s been the odd inappropriate link before that the mods have had to delete as quickly as they’re notified about it.
