I’d personally recommend against red, or any super-bright color. A blue sweater and tan slacks is likely fine.
Yeah, gotta agree with @kenobi_65. Red is never appropriate. Unless the deceased is your ex-husband, you’re wearing a red dress and dancing on his grave.
It also depends on your relationship with the survivors. A friend came to my father’s funeral in cargo shorts and a shabby t-shirt. He was by far the worst-dressed person there. And I was really comforted by his presence. (He also made some of my sister’s friends feel better – she’d told them it would be informal, and they felt underdressed until he showed up.)
That is to say, your presence matters more than what you wear.
But tan jeans and a blue sweater sounds fine.

Absolutely true. My advice was mostly based on the thought that most funerals are on the serious side, and I, myself, wouldn’t want to dress like I was going out for a fun dinner, or a party (which is what the red corduroys suggested to me). But, yeah, mostly, it’s that you’re there for your friend and friend’s family.
Unless there’s something about them that makes them looks more like party wear, they’re likely to be just fine.
In Hawaii, Aloha shirts are de rigueur for funerals. Really. Back when people still read newspapers, obituaries routinely concluded with, “Aloha attire requested.” They probably even had a macro for it.
In Israel, burial is usually within 24 hours of death, and often on the same day, so people usually show up to funerals in their work clothes, whatever they may be.
I wore blue jeans and a black polo shirt to my mother’s funeral. She had bought me the shirt years earlier.
