GA Governor Brian Kemp for President in 2024?

With Georgia Governor Brian Kemp winning re-election over Stacey Abrams this year, and several arguments to be made that he’s taken on Trump and defeated him as no other Republican has, there’s talk from at least one source, which I will share, that Kemp may stand for election to the presidency in 2024 and challenge Trump in the Republican primary. And maybe if he wins the nomination, we can get back to having a reasonably functional Republican party again. Or at least one that’s not living in its own reality.

So let’s talk about it. I literally know nothing about Brian Kemp aside from the fact that he stood up to Trump and told him he couldn’t invent ten thousand or so votes out of the clear blue sky. What does he stand for? Would he be a good alternative to Biden, if he were to run for re-election? (Yes, I know he’s still a Republican, but Biden wasn’t my first choice in the Democratic primary-- Elizabeth Warren was-- and I groused during the election that Biden and I share so little in common. I’m at least somewhat pleased with how he’s performed as president, though, especially when compared to TFG.)

Georgia is a weird state. The purplest of states. A DA that is going to indict Trump (Fani Willis). A Pub that stood up to Trump (Brad Raffensperger). A Dem populist that can’t win (Stacy Abrahms). A Black Dem Senator (Raphael Warnock) that the Pubs can’t unseat.

The Pubs should look at Georgia as a model of what they have to do to win in 2024 because the fact that it is not a blue guaranty is a miracle. But anyone that talks to me (as a Republican) about Brian Kemp or Lisa Murkowski running in 2024 … I’m just going to accuse you of being a tease.

Running is different than getting the nomination.

He very much had distanced himself from Walker before but is now acting as the big power endorsement, pushing for him, testing out anti-Biden ads.

If Walker wins it will be because of the support Kemp gave, including his turnout apparatus. I can imagine him trying to leverage that into a bid for the nomination. He’d not get it, but could divide the not-Trump field …

Hopefully that is moot, with a Walker resounding loss.
