Wasn’t going to Frey to shore things up Cat’s idea?
No - it was Robb’s. That’s why he asked Cat if it was a good idea.
Exactly, this is a major exposition of both this world and Stannis’ character. He wants to reward Davos, and raises him far above his wildest dreams, but won’t do so without also punishing his past crimes. He (and just possibly Ned Stark?) is the only Lord who would have addressed the past crimes an insisted upon complete justice. A Lord has the right to decide what to reward and what to punish and what to ignore.
Which is why Stannis would make a lousy King. He is just, but stuck in a black and white world. One cannot rule without the ability to operate in the shades of grey required by “The Game.”
Well, potential opponents for them now include:
-Ice zombies
-Stannis, who doesn’t have much of an army currently but is allied with a woman who can give birth to shadow assassin babies
-Littlefinger and Varys, both master manipulator types potentially with motivations of their own
-The Tyrells, the second richest family in Westeros
-The mother of dragons (currently on another continent, but clearly capable of getting shit done in a hurry)
-The fact that the current king, while a Lannister, is a psychopathic nutjob, his mother is an idiot, his uncle/father just had a hand chopped off and seems to be going through a midlife crisis, and his other uncle, the only one other than his grandfather who seems competent at leadership, is a dwarf who no one respects, and who actually seems to have a moral code
Other than that, things are looking peachy!
There was funny in the episode. I especially liked The Hound’s this-little-bitch-is-insane! look he gave Arya when she clocked the hog farmer with a tree limb.
He seems to have a soft spot for the Stark women.
Walder Frey was actually funny in a dickish way right until the end too, the look he gives Robb when they reveal Edmure’s wife is perfect.
I suppose Joffrey will be the one to break the “bad” news to Sansa next week? God. I’m tempted to spoil the rest of the story just to find out if anything good ever happens to the Starks. Because I can’t take much more of a beating with them.
Also, I’ve never hated anyone more than I hate the Lannisters. Including real people.
I wonder how Edmure Tully’s storyline is going to play out. Also, in light of the tragedy of the Starkes’ it’s frustrating to watch the Khaleesi win another overwhelming victory.
Also, interesting that Essos is entirely city-states. Daenny is just rolling through them.
There are only two other moments in television that shocked me anything close to this and they both pale.
The Show: 24 - Season 1
The Spoiler:Jack has just spent the whole day trying to save the world and just as we think everything is a-ok, bad guys stopped the final show of the first season is wrapping up, his pregnant wife is killed by a leftover bad guy. Seriously we had finally been allowed to think everything was over and a traditional “happy ending” was upon us when this happens.
The Show:The Wire
The Spoiler: Omar getting shot and it was strange, because I think deep down we all knew Omar was not long for this world. But as the series rolled on we actually started to believe he was invincible. The series was apportioning its end and everybody liked Omar, so we got comfortable, complacent, maybe forgetting that he was in constant danger. And then the way he was killed, small kid just walks up and shoots him. It seemed so petty in a way, like Omar deserved a grander death and he was simply shot like any other gangster, in the street by somebody he didn’t even know.
Me: “I’m not going in to work today.”
Boss: “Why not?”.
Me: “THE STARKS ARE DEAD!”
::hangs up::
OK, that made me smile.
Martin is apparently a master at the setup/knockdown approach to writing. It leaves me wondering when and how everyone else will die, rather than how they might win in the end.
I gotta say, I feel bad for my coworkers who are waiting to watch this episode tonight. It’s going to be a long day for them.
I dont think what happened in the last episode was a big surprise.
It wasnt for me and I didnt read the books.
With that said I didnt expect to see two main characters killed in one swoop like that.
I also didnt feel very attached to the Rob’s Arc because he was never onscreen for any length of time.
I never got any scope of the war he was waging, I dont know he just didnt feel like an important character to me.
Cat on the other hand had a much better character development and I felt sad for her demise.
One question, since I stepped out of the room for second. Why is Bran going north of the wall now? I thought their plan was just to go to Castle Black.
To find the three eyed crow that keeps appearing in his dreams.
Yeah, it’s been noted that the Yunkishmen (I think that’s what you call someone from Yunkai) are not a particularly martial people. They rely on mercenaries and slave soldiers, probably either Unsullied they bought pre-Astapor destruction or their own off brand generic Unsullied knock offs. The mercenaries already switched sides, it’s doubtful that the slave soldiers took much convincing to switch to team Sexy Dragon Messiah Emancipation Squad once the enemies were literally inside the walls.
What I Did this Summer
by Arya Stark
This Summer was the worst summer ever. It started out ok when me and my brothers and sisters all got new Dire wolves for pets (Rob even got one!). But then we had to go to King’s Landing which I hate. Rob was sent to take the black, which made me quite sad, although he did give me a nifty little sword called ‘needle’. My father even let me train with a master named Syrio.
The King killed my sister’s dire wolf, and then they killed my friend, the butcher’s boy because he struck Joffrey, who sucks. Then Syrio was killed and then they chopped my father’s head off…RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! It was the Lannisters whoi did it after King Robert died and than awful Joffrey was made King, because…why!!!
I escaped King’s Landing and had to pretend to be aboy as I headed to the Wall where I would be re-united with Jon, but we were ambushed by Lannisters along the way and I was forced to be a house"boy" for Tywin Lannister , which was…awkward. I also befriended some guy name Jaqur (not sure about the spelling) who killed people when I asked him to, because I saved him from a fire. I don’t think I picked the best people, then he changed his face gave me coin and disappeared with the words “Valor morghulis”. I still have the coin.
Anyway, I escaped from Tywin witha couple of friends and ran into a group called the Brotherhood Without Banners, who were actually nice, but mercenaries nonetheless. They were going to ransom me but I ran away, only to be captured by The Hound, one of Joffreys men. But he wasn’t with Joffrey anymore and he was going to sell me back to my mother who was at the Twins for her brothers wedding.
So when the Hound and myself get there, I realize that the Freys are MURDERING EVERYONE I KNOW! Including Robb 's Direwolf! Seriously, what the fuck! Lord knows I wanted to go in there and do some murder, but the Hound stopped me, probably for my own good.
And meanwhile, I found out that Winterfell was sacked and likley my other brothers are dead. So that sucks.
So in summary over the summer I saw my father killed, was around when my mother and brother were killed, had my best brother friend Jon sent to the Wall likely to never be seen again. My other brothers are dead, so I hear. Saw countless direwolves killed, a friend killed, my teacher killed.
So yeah, my summer was shitty.
They’re more what you’d call “guidelines” than actual rules. [/barbarossa]
That was my question too.
So it’s to find the three-eyed crow? That seems… unnecessary.
Also.. now that Bran is basically psychic and has no use of his legs… he’s like the Westeros young version of Professor X.
I was all WTF-ing Snow’s hasty depature from Ygritte and what he could have assumed was the clsoe proximity of his half-brothers. Wanting to warn Castle Black makes sense, as does him wanting to lead the remaining Wildlings away from that location if Bran and Ricon were there.
Also, could Snow make a claim to the Stark legacy at this point? He was acknowledged as Eddards bastard son. Same as the leech kid is seen as a potential rival for the Iron Throne while being a bastard, could Jon Snow as eldest son of Eddard Stark claim Winterfell–even with Bran and Ricon being alive? Or since everyone believes them dead-- could he stake it as his own. Or does Sansa as acknowledged child of Ned and Kat trump that.
Speaking of which.. how many direwolves are left? Bran and Ricons are near. Snow’s is shadowing Gilly and Sam… Arya’s was sent away in the first season and hasn’t been back right?
I agree. I didn’t really feel that attached to Rob, he just wasn’t that interesting to me. But I did feel for poor Arya. And I knew something bad was going to happen, when The Hound said something about how Rob and Cat were still at the Twins and how she’d see them soon.
Does he have a plan regarding the crow? Just find it, and see what happens? I guess he doesn’t really have much else to do other than avoid being killed by any of the various armies, so he might as well try to find the crow.
