Game of Thrones 3.09 "The Rains of Castamere" 6/2/13 No book spoilers

Of the top of my head, Tyrion is whistling it when he walks in on the small council on the first episode of season 2, Bronn is singing it in the tavern scene before the battle of the blackwater and calls it “the Lannister song”, It plays over the credits of the blackwater episode, the brotherhood without banners is singing it when they run into Arya Gendry and Hot Pie, it played while Jamie rescued Brienne from the bear, it also plays over the credits of another episode i can’t remember and Cersei explains the story behind the song last episode. I don’t think they could have beat that song into our heads any harder than they did.

I recognized it. It’s been used in the show a few times and it was featured prominently in the commercials for this season. Watching last night’s episode, I reacted to the musicians playing it even before Cat did.

I find I miss a lot because of accents and the source I use to watch the episodes has everyone speaking in whispers so I did not get the significance of the song but I knew this was coming because I read a spoiler about the red wedding a while back, I just wasn’t sure when it was happening.

The other heartbreaking thing about this episode is how on two separate occasions members of the Stark household were so close to being reunited but ended up being further split apart. Aside from the deaths, now Bran and Rickon have been separated, the last two Starks that still were with family.

I was most upset about Arya not being able to rescue Robb’s wolf in time, I knew the others were going to die - I just wasn’t sure the wolf would and I want Arya to have a wolf again.

This, and other things said about the laws and claims and all that, remind me of the competing “theories of power” that Petyr, Cersei, Varys and others presented in seasons past:

Littlefinger: “Knowledge is power.”

Cersei: (Sure is; like I know I can have you killed whenever I want.) “Power is power.”

Creepy ESP Ninjalady in Quarth: “Dragons are fire made flesh…and *fire *is power.” (no doubt Lady Dickleech would agree about the fire is power bit.)

Varys: “Power” resides where people *believe *it resides. It’s a trick, a shadow on the wall… and a very small man can cast a very large shadow."

Just curious, but the Riverlands are NOT part of the North as is made clear many times. Have they accepted the now deceased Robb as their King or they wish to be independant.

They all pledged to Robb, probably because that whole King of the North thing happened right after he saved their ass from Jamie’s army.

It’s nothing but a wild(ling) hope on my part, but I’d be pretty pleased to see Nymeria return at some opportune moment in an upcoming season to tear out some Lannister (or Frey) throats. Between them, they’ve killed her brother and sister, and I think she’s due for a bit of revenge.

Question about the trailer for next week.
I quite cant understand what Tyrion says at te begining, He says “The northermen…”.
What is the complete sentence that he says?

“The northerners will never forget.”

We think alike. Every time Arya has been in danger I keep expecting/wanting a wolf to spring out of nowhere to save her.

Thank you.
Thats what I thought but I couldnt really hear it…
Odd statement from Tyrion isnt it?
Perhaps a hint of whats to come.
Tyrion is the odd one isnt it? He seems honorable and that kinda goes against the theme of the show.
I wonder if and when the Lannisters are defeated if he would be spared?

But I wonder what North is he talking about, with Winterfell done theres not much left is there?

The only real threat now is Danayeris isnt she?

Well, there’s apparently a lot of scattered villages and minor castles and so forth who are still pledged to House Stark, and though they may not be organized so much yet, something like this could be a catalyst for uniting against the Bad Guys. There’s also the point that Tyrion was trying to make to Cersei in S2, that it might be difficult to rule people who hate you and want you dead.

There’s also the White Walkers, though I doubt Tyrion is thinking of them when he says “northerners.”

It still needs to be governed, and he is married to the heir(as far as anyone knows) of Winterfell making him the man that eventually is going to have to do the governing.

Which is weird, because evidently there’s only two fukken songs in the entire kingdoms : the Bear and the Maiden Fair (the jaunty tune played just before) and the Rains of Castamere. Those are the only songs anybody ever plays or sings in the series :). One would assume they just played both on a loop throughout the wedding :p.

Well, there’s also “every single Wildling”, which are coming much like Winter ; and behind them there’s another, larger set of “every single Wildling, past or present” ;).

Winterfell is just one castle. The North is populated with actual people. Including a pretty large port city, White Harbor, which Ned was seeking a ship to flee towards.

Actually - I have a question here. How much “time” has passed between the start of the series and “now”? The only mentions of time that I remember well is from S1, when someone (Cersei?) was whinging that it took a month to get from King’s Landing to Winterfell. Didn’t Jaime complain in an earlier episode (maybe episode 7?) that he’d been tromping around with Brienne for several months in the same boots?

Pretty much the only way this season has a happy ending is if we see Geoffrey’s Wedding, with all the Lannisters in attendance, and out of the blue, something starts blasting “Shoot to Thrill” by AC/DC, a wall explodes, and Iron Man (aka Tony STARK) bursts through to kick Lannister ass…

He said he had been wearing the same boots for over a year, which i assume is the time he spent prisoner.

Yeah, I thought it was because he intended for her to live and her own people would kill her if she took up arms against them.

I definitely recognized it. When they started playing it right as the doors closed, I immediately thought “Oh crap!” but then when it didn’t happen right away I thought I was imagining things.

BTW, here is the version of “Rains of Castamere” that was played over the credits of episode 2.09. I cannot vouch for a lack of spoilers in the comments section (I myself am not a reader of these books so I refuse to look), so read further down on that page at your own risk. The video itself is just a picture, so you can just listen without looking.

I don’t know if it’s so odd - Tyrion is pretty smart and I’m sure he realizes that, even though many former Stark bannermen switched sides, there are still some loyalists who will forever blame the Lannisters for killing Ned (especially since I’m sure rumours of Joffrey’s parentage have made it even to the Winterfell metropolitan area). Even though Tyrion was not directly involved, he is still a Lannister.
